The ref running alongside him was not an official. He was a guy who sneaked in the stadium wearing a referee uniform.

Also, the best footage we have was filmed by the worst cameraman of all time. He missed about 3 seconds of action focusing on a pileup.

Dude could still play multiple positions to this day if he were in the here and now. RB/WR/TE/FS/SS/LB and run the wildcat offense and be a real force at each position IMO.

He was way ahead of his time. RIP Billy Cannon!!! True LSU LEGEND!!!

How fast was Cannon in the 40?

I know he had a good time in the 100. We judge by the 40 today and they didn’f use it back then. I’ve always wondered.

I'd say he was a steady 4.3 to 4.4 these days with more accurate timing. And I'm sure he could lower that time on some occasions.

He was blazing fast for his size. Sub 10 in the 100 is crazy fast.

He's faster than Reggie Bush and Trindon Holiday. Both didn't come close to his 100 yard mark. 10.42 / 10 flat. So he was very fast. People saying 4.5 have no idea. The run against Ole Miss, no he wasn't running his best speed time but it was also a bad field, he hit a whole defense on the way and it was the 4th quarter. That run was likely 4.5 or 4.6 while worn out lol.

Cannon was very fast, but you are comparing his time for 100 yards vs Holiday for 100 meters

Yea that’s way off. He wasn’t faster than Holliday. I read conversions off of a track website that a 9.8 100 yd dash translates to something around a 10.8-10.9 100 M

That would be incorrect. You are already at top speed at 100 yards with about 9-1/2 yards to go. You would cover that in about .8 seconds. The longest time period of the race is the first 10 yards out of the starting blocks!

They said 9.4 in the 100 (yds) on the radio the other day. I think Cliff Branch ran a 9.1 for comparison.

My understanding he was a ref, but used his uniform to get because he could not get ticket - absolutely no tickets available! I was fortunately sitting in student section as freshman.

Cannon was very fast for the time (not as fast as Holiday). He was either the strongest sprinter or the fastest shot putter of all time - with 9.4 in hundred he threw the shot almost 60 in high school!

That was close to the world record at the time. Frank Budd of Villanova set a new world record in 1961 of 9.2 seconds in the 100 meters

When comparing Cannon with Holiday, consider the obvious difference...their sizes. And Cannon played both ways and still was fast/strong enough to make that run in the fourth quarter

No and No. He was not faster than Holiday or Bush (but in fairness, he was much, much bigger).

You are comparing 100 yard times to 100 meter times.
