An 8 QB list without him is worthless.

It amazes me when fans decide to have a specific cutoff for “the best of” any position. Any list that doesn’t have Bert Jones way up on that list shouldn’t be posted.

Mauck won our first NC in 45 years- think he should be much higher than many of you have him. Sure 03 D was unreal- but his clutch leadership was off the charts- even pre-injury in 02 and when we beat TN in 01 SEC- first SEC title since 88!

I like Mauck and he was a solid QB...but let's be real, this notion of clutch leadership is questionable at best. His play was downright poor in our biggest games.

Georgia: 14 of 29 for 180 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Ole Miss: 16 of 29 for 189 yards, 2 TD, 3 INT
Georgia: 14 of 22 for 151 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
Oklahoma: 13 of 22 for 124 yards, 0 TD, 2 INT

Maybe people are cutting off at the guys they've seen play. In which case I'm right there with the OP, because Herb was the QB when I started watching LSU consistently.

We'll just take you geezers' word for it when it comes to Bert Jones, YA, etc.

Right, some of his clutch plays were needed because he messed up earlier. Still love the guy though.

Jimbo just called another QB draw vs Tenner...

No. Forget about their Pro careers. That's irrelevant. In terms of quarterback play at LSU, Jamarcus was much better than Flynn. Yes, Flynn won a natty, but that doesn't mean he was a better quarterback. His 2006 stats are clearly better than Flynn's stats in 2007

Jamarcus Russell - 2006
3,129 yards - 67.8% Completion - 28 TDs - 8 INTs

Matt Flynn - 2007
2,407 yards - 56.2% Completion - 21 TDs - 11 INTs

I am amazed how people just can't rank the players that are listed. OP didn't say the best ever, just said rank these players. Either rank these players or don't comment.

Flynn was a much better pro QB than college.

He led us to a National Championship. He was on an LSU team less talented than Russell. He holds the single game yardage record at Green Bay. More Yards than Bart Starr and Rogers.

Good point, but OP didn’t have any other instructions either. Should we account for their professional career?

Based on talent/production/Legacy at LSU:

1 Joe Burrow (easy)
2 Matt Mauck (he is the OG 18)
3 Matt Flynn (win a natty, you’re in the top)
4 JaMarcus Russell
5 Rohan Davey
6 Herb Tyler
7 Zach Mettenberger

Jayden Daniels could land anywhere between 2 & 6 depending on his performance this year.
Win a natty & heisman & #1 pick in the draft? We would have a different discussion.

Herb Tyler shouldn't be on that list.

Technically he’s tied with Rodgers.

Regardless, none of that makes Flynn a better QB than Russell. And I have nothing against Flynn in any possible way.

This board just has an irrational dislike of Russell for some reason. I believe we win the NC in 2006 if Miles/Jimbo weren’t complete brick heads against Auburn.

It’ll be a real fun discussion for you in the near future when fans that never saw Burrow play cut him out of their discussion and include only plug QBs they’ve seen play. You’re a clown.

Joe Burrow had the best season ever for a college QB. There's nobody else on his level, especially in the LSU program.

This line of thinking makes Trent Dilfer a better NFL QB than Dan Marino.
