1) Joe Burrow -- can't really imagine any other answer
\/
\/
\/
\/
\/
\/
2) JaMarcus Russell -- unseated Hodson as my all-time #1 LSU QB
3) Matt Flynn -- underrated as a QB with more than passing ability, imo
4) Rohan Davey -- maybe it was all Josh Reed, but Ro was a monster
5) Zach Mettenberger
\/
6) Matt Mauck -- won the first Natty of my lifetime, talented runner, but just not elite as elite at the QB position as those ahead
7) Herb Tyler -- helped bring back the magic as a true frosh with Kevin Faulk & Booger; orchestrated that awesome '97 Florida game

* Jayden Daniels -- can't rank yet; isn't done

There are others that have been mentioned that would figure into my list (Hodson, Jones, etc.), but they weren't in the OP so I'm not including them. And my list is just based on if I was picking a QB in a draft to build a team, and based on their peak at LSU. In terms of how much I enjoyed/liked/appreciated them, there would be some movement (especially Herb & Ro moving up).

his NFL career was a flop because he was lazy.

Huh. I struggle to imagine a world where I would call the career of a guy who made $40 million and retired before he was 30 a "flop". I mean, I get where you're coming from with the dismal performances, disastrous failures on the field, utter lack of results, and brevity of his career. But still . . . $40 million? A flop?

quote:

He gave zero effort once he signed his rookie contract.

I've never been convinced he gave up quite that quickly. It seemed to me at the time that the first part of that first season he was still giving the effort, but the complete shitshow that was the Raiders franchise at the time just crushed him (like it had so many other NFL star-caliber athletes before him). My impression was that as soon as he saw that, he took his $40 mill & checked out. Of course, I had largely given up on the NFL by then and may have been looking through purple & gold tinted glasses since I was a huge JaMarcus fan, so I could have been mistaken.

My take on JaMarcus has always been that he was a ridiculously gifted athlete with an almost unprecedented arm talent coupled with exceptional size and athleticism. And somebody told him early on that if he busted his butt, worked hard, and mastered the game, he could become a millionaire in the NFL. Which is precisely what he did. He worked his butt off and became one of the most highly sought after high school QB recruits, and then kept working to become the best QB in college football and the most highly sought after NFL prospect, got drafted #1 and signed a contract for $40 million. He won football. Then (either before or after becoming disillusioned with the NFL and/or the Raiders) he said, "f--- it", then he retired a rich, rich man.

Not the narrative of an NFL legend to be sure, but not a bad life story if you can live it.

It’ll be a real fun discussion for you in the near future when fans that never saw Burrow play cut him out of their discussion and include only plug QBs they’ve seen play.

Eh, it happens.

Though in Burrow's case it might not, or it'll take a looong time. Because 1) we have so many readily available highlights of him with today's (and future) technology, 2) he looks to be a top tier NFL QB for awhile (so his pro career keeps his name in the spotlight longer than the other guys listed) and 3) he's far and away the LSU GOAT.

Damn man. Why so serious?

Trent Dilfer is a better QB than Dan Marino, Jim Kelly, Fran Tarkenton, Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham. Got it.

I hate all these attempts to rank players.

What's the criteria? Championships? Raw stats? Heart? Leadership?

Now sure, I think Joe Burrow tops any list based on virtually any criteria, but hell, a great QB could be way down the list because they played on a crappy team with no supporting cast.

Why not just appreciate all of them for their accomplishments.

Bert Jones was probably the best pure dropback passer the Tigers ever had, but that style of QB play is becoming a thing of the past.

There's anecdotal evidence Jones could loft a pass 100 yards. I never saw him actually do it, just heard about it during my high school days

Andrew Hatch wasn't a bad QB at all-- his actual play time at LSU was limited.

The only significant game I remember him playing in was a 24-17 win at South Carolina; he looked pretty good that evening, throwing a TD pass and responsible for two more TDs. He had to come in the game generally to relieve a mistake-prone Jarrett Lee.

Is it too late to start an Andrew Hatch Appreciation Club?

Mauck was an decent QB with a great team.

Never understood why Saban kept him in that Florida game in 2002 with a 36-7 lead. Huge mistake as he got seriously hurt and it ruined that season for the Tigers.

I love Matt Flynn. Dude waited his turn and it paid major dividends, but…

He couldn’t beat very bad Kentucky and Arkansas teams in 2007. We were very lucky to make the BCS championship game. Never doubted we would win that game. But he’s definitely not #2

If Mettenberger is a top 3 LSU QB well…that’s just sad.

FTR I don’t even think he’s honorable mention
