This isn't a case of one region of the country using a term that's different than another region of the country (like icebox vs. refrigerator or creek vs. crick). This is one animal being being referred to by the wrong name.

You wouldn't call a cat a dog, or a falcon a parrot... When you write out "possum" instead of "opossum" you are doing just that.

And yes, the O in opossum is silent. Just like the H in herbs and the P in psychology.

Please! I am from the south and we say POSSUM! Maybe New Orleans city folks say Oppossum seeing how they sound like they are from New York City, but in the south it is possum, period!

I'm born and raised in the South and have never heard anyone refer to it as an Opossum. Always possum.

I understand what you're saying, and I recognize that they're different animals. But here's how language and culture works: If something technically incorrect is used and accepted as the correct name of a thing/animal, it becomes a colloquial name for that item. It doesn't really matter if it's not technically correct.

Uh no. Not at all. "Opossum" is derived from "Aposoum", a Virginia Algonquian word that is roughly translated as "white beast.”

YOU'RE NOT CLEVER.

STAHP.

It's not about being clever. It's about being correct. Opossum is the correct term for this marsupial.

I don't care if you are from Bogalusa, Baton Rouge, Bunkie, New Orleans, Livonia, etc...there is one correct term for this type of marsupial, and that is "opossum." If you want to keep spelling it "possum", because you are from the South, that is fine, but you will be wrong.
