How do you judge that before they even get on the court and play? Okay, Ben Simmons is the best looking high school player I have ever seen. I would be shocked if he didn't excel. But the other two are unproven and may flop.

Ricky Blanton, Jose Vargas..final 4. Played Hakeem in the PMAC and the Georgetown in the dome.

Now, That's funny. It makes me realize how little younger people know about those years. They'd poop their pants if the saw the 1981 team, or the 86 team or the Shaq/Stanly/CJ/Blanton/Williamson/Singleton era teams.
This thread was a fun trip down memory lane and it's interesting to read the opinions of different generations. I never followed recruiting during the late 70's early 80's while in high school, but those teams were more special than some of the younger group may be able to imagine. These teams were LSU athletics to many fans back then because the football team was struggling, to be kind, and the baseball dynasty had not yet arrived. Like I said, didn't follow recruiting until recently but still knew Shaq's life history before he ever stepped on campus. To say that he wasn't highly recruited, or whatever the earlier comment, is plain crazy.

They were in different classes but Rudy Macklin, Lionel Green, Jordy Hultberg, Hi C Carter, Willie Sims, Greg Cook, Dwyane Scales, etc. would be hard to beat. They formed great run from '77 - '81.

Not the same class. Shaq. came a year later.
The '88-'89 recruiting class of Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts, Geert Hammink, Vernel Singleton, Mo Williamson and Harold Boudreaux is easily the most talented single class in LSU history. The first three guys were NBA first rounders and all of them played professionally. The down side was Roberts and Boudreaux had grade issues resulting in only one year of play for Roberts after sitting out a year and Boudreaux actually had to delay entering school for a season, pushing back to Oneal's class. He wound up flunking out after two seasons. Mo was a late arrival due to grades and struggled in the disciplinary area. CJ was fabulous but only for two seasons due to his family's need for NBA bucks. Hammink was a project but he really developed, becoming All SEC and a first round pick after all of his classmates and Shaq. had departed for various reasons. Other than Hammink, only Singleton played four seasons for the Tigers.

Dwayne Scales was on that team as well. We should have won it all that year.

As well, I don't recall that there was a rating scale of up to 5 stars on players back then. I could be wrong, but - even if there was a scale - I certainly don't remember there being as much publicity for high school players as they now receive.

Where does Ricky Blanton's final 4 teams fit with this. They played Hakeems's Phi Slamma Jamma in the PMAC and Ewings Georgetown team in the dome.

Olajuwan was drafted by The Rockets in 1984 when Blanton was a sophomore in High School in Miami. Just sayin'.
And excellent post by Randy 44.

The Astronaut, Dwayne Scales, screwed up and spoke to an agent as soon as the Tigers lost to Louisville in the 1980 Elite 8. Brown found out and advised him to head for the NBA, otherwise he could have been on the GOAT '81 team, probably meaning Freshman Leonard Mitchell comes off the bench rather than starts. They likely go undefeated National Champs with Scales on the '81 team.

Not in the same recruiting class, though. CJ was a year before Shaq and Stanley...

Blanton started LSU in '84. But, you're correct, Olajawan was not on that team.

Chris Jackson, Harold Boudreaux, Stanley Roberts, Mo Williamson, Vernel Singleton

It may rival the late 80s/early 90s classes of:
Shaq, Chris Jackson, Wayne Sims, Stanley Roberts, Vernel Singleton and Maurice Williamson; and the early 2000s classes of Stromile Swift, Jabari, Glenn Davis, Tyrus Thomas, etc.
But I don't think it can touch late 70's/early 80s classes of DeWayne Scales, Rudy Macklin, Greg Cook, Leonard Mitchell, Howard Carter, Ethan Martin, Willie Sims, Ty Black, etc.
Yet, anyway. Maybe this class and the next will! I wanna see (and hear) the Def dome ROCKING again!

no. PISTOL all by himself could score as many points as these new " players "

The only class I can think of that comes close was the '88 class with Chris Jackson and Stanley Roberts. But Roberts was not as highly rated as Jackson/ So, really, considering how highly rated Ben and Antonio are, I would say no, this class is the highest rated as far as how highly rated those two are. John Williams in the '84 class was, I'm almost certain, Dales highest rated recruit up to that point. But he was the only top 50 player in the class. The year LSU brought in Ronnie Henderson and Randy Livingston come to mind. Livingston was a highly rated prospect, not sure where he ranked though. And not sure about Henderson's rating. I think those two were in the same class, but I could be wrong. I'm getting old. LOL

Jtigers99 Yea, you beat me to it. Shaq was '89, Jackson and Roberts '88. I'm trying to remember if Livingston and Henderson were in the same class. Do you remember?

Macklin, Cook, Scales quite a trio up front with Martin,Sims in back court that was by far best team to ever play in PMAC.
