Ok, in general, I am very pleased with the coaching staff and the personnel decisions that have been made.

But WTF is up with the personnel selection for kick and punt returners. This is LSU. We are loaded with skill players. Why do we have a bunch of walkons returning kicks. This is just baffling to me. Can a guy like Boutte return kicks? Dude is a great athlete and isn’t getting many touches on offense. Let him impact the game on special teams. Or use one of our other elite athletes. Polian must be on crack. Rant over, but this is maddening.

You don't think the coaches want the best players back there as well?

I say put Jayden back there… What’s the worst that could happen?

You saw what happened with Nabers, why is this puzzling?

We tried Nabers and he muffed two of them.

Ultimately the reason you don’t see more elite skill position players returning punts/kicks is the risk of injury. First the coaches have to decide that the chance for an explosive return is worth that risk. Then the player has to want to return kicks/punts. Many don’t.

And then the player has to actually be good at it. It’s a different skill set than being a WR/RB - catching a pass is different than catching a punt (as we saw with Nabers) and making guys miss in punt coverage, when you’re starting from a dead stop with multiple guys running right at you, is different than making guys miss on plays from scrimmage.

So you’re looking for a guy who will catch the punt 100% of the time, can make guys miss after he catches it, won’t make stupid decisions, does these things well enough to be worth the injury risk, and is willing to take on the injury risk himself.

Or you put a walk on out there and let them practice fair catching all day.

I’m not sure it’s just about the players actually returning the kicks. Could be that we don’t have great special teams because we don’t really have enough depth. Guys that would normally be playing special teams are 4 and 5 star guys in the past 15 years at LSU. Currently, that isn’t necessarily the case and we may need to be careful that we don’t get our starters killed on special teams.

I'd like to see Nabers get another shot at it.

Not gonna lie, but Clayton makes Jonathon Giles look electric.

I'd like to see Sage get a shot too.

But it would not surprise me that the risk of injury in the defensive backfield impacts the decision. I could see them being reticent to use 1s&2s from the defensive backfield.

Step 1: catch AND secure ball

Step 2:

Step 3: Profit!
-----------------------------

Polian had issues at ND as ST coach. Polian is having major issues at LSU as ST coach. It can not be explained away.

However, have to remember they are being exacerbated by the roster rebuild. When you're starting freshmen LT's, LBs, K, etc. there's not a lot of super duper talent left in the cupboard to man the STs. Starting from 39 scholarship players is a pretty deep hole.

Having said that, if there isn't steady improvement a coaching issue will have to be addressed. Right now that is being addressed by CBK taking a personal role in their coaching.

I’m sold. Clayton, Francioni, and Nicholas are the best options we have. These dudes wouldn’t start at Nicholls but deserve the roles at LSU.
