Some folks like the flavor of the month, others like to fight against the majority, personally, im glad they do it. Makes it easier to identify confused fake azz people.

I was at the Auburn/Ole Miss game this weekend and randomly got into a conversation with this guy who goes to Auburn, but claims to be a Bama fan. He was wearing Auburn gear, but said when they play Bama he wears crimson and cheers for the Tide. He had no connection to Bama at all. I hate Auburn, but I still wanted to yell at the guy

I will never understand this mentality. When they were younger, my boys used to ask me things like, "Dad, who's your second favorite SEC team?" or "who's your second favorite NFC team?" I would simply say that I don't have one. The only reason I would ever root for another team, especially in conference, is if their winning would help my team.

2. The "fans" that just like to follow the best team. They're lifelong fans of X university....that is until they start losing. Today's Alabama fans were Miami fans 10+ years ago. Before that, they were Florida St. "die hards" recently converted from being Michigan fanatics.

BINGO!

I also call it the "hangers-on/frontrunner" syndrome. No real loyalty to anything except their own ego.

A lot of the people I know, who pull for Bama, are Saban fans and hate Miles

Good thread, and a lot of people touch on the contrarian and front-runner types.

Regarding "pretend Bama fans in LA."-most of the time it's just an admission that you have arrived at your college football allegiance from a place of RESENTMENT. You don't like LSU (or more likely you don't like somebody you know that has an allegiance to LSU) and this is how you tweak them and try to get under their skin.

Regarding that weird creepy sub-species of Bama "fans" that have arrived at their allegiance because HE is their coach, I am reminded of my Russian history courses in college. Some people just want a dictator. They want a "Strong man" who is extremely competent. You know like they are (lol). I run into this guy all the time, he is the epitome of mediocrity in every way,and in every aspect of life, but views himself as "pissing excellence" like his Leader. Nick Saban. He finds Les Miles to be horrible just like his horrible boss at work, and his horrible brother with the big house, and his horrible neighbor with his fancy vacations and smart-arse kids. All those people are mediocre. He and Nick piss excellence. This fan has fantasies of a close friendship with Saban, where they go fishing and knock back cocktails . Sometimes in these fantasies they don't even talk, they just trade knowing glances...

These guys are everywhere.

Looking back at my yearbook from middle school (early to mid 90's) the preponderance of kids wore Miami, Notre Dame and FSU gear. Very little to none for LSU and this was a school in Baton Rouge.

I don't know that there were a lot of UF fans here in the 90s but I do know I was here. Still am. UF dominated LSU in football when I grew up. Therefore I became, have been, and still am a UF fan. I go to at least 2 games a year. Went to 4 games during the 4-8 seaso

A lot of them are UL-Lafayette related and a lot are kids who want to associate with a winning team. Watch how many will become LSU fans if Fournette runs wild and LSU wins a National Championship

I'll never understand the phenomenon of adopting a college team as "your" team for which you have no natural connection to, either geographic, familial, or actual attendance there. It's bizarre. Fortunately, I just don't feel like I need to take such folks seriously, at all.
This. It's college football. I mean, the affiliation with the school or city/state is kind of the whole point of being a fan.

Same here. Back in the starter jacket days there was one kid in my whole school that had an LSU starter jacket. One kid with a saints jacket. Everyone else just had random teams. I had a Michigan one cause I liked the FAB five.

You're right Miami, Notre Dame and FSU was very popular in the 90's. As a kid you don't have a chance to develop loyalty to a team. No one wanted to have a jacket of a bad sports team.

I remember I loved Eastbay catalogs. This was before the internet. They hardly ever had LSU gear in the eastbay catalogs.

I had a confrontation with one in Don's Meats in Scott a couple of years ago. Of course it was a bitter old a-hole ULL fan sporting HIS Alabama t-shirt.

So your dad was a big Dolphins fan too?

Gators, Dolphins, Crimson Tide- its the aquatic mascots this family appears to gravitate towards. They just don't want to admit that, deep down, they are just confused Tulane fans.
