on the bright side, recruiting wise he can't do worse than Trent. I think he'll actually be an improvement in coaching and recruiting over the previous regime......but they set the bar pretty fricking low

will he be making more than Nikki Caldwell?
Yes. Unfortunately.
The reason: Men's basketball makes a profit and women's doesn't. It has nothing to do with anything else.

OK, Jones will not make less than Nikki and close to, if not what TJ was making, $1.2M. Therefore, I say he gets a minimum guarantee of $1M annually ($500K Salary, $350K TV and Weekly shows, 150K tennis shoe deal, etc...
Then he will have a bonus pool of the following:
$50K SEC West Champion
$100K SEC Champion
$50K SEC Tournament Championship-Gets LSU in big dance automatically even if other incentives are not met
$100K making NCAA Tournament
$100K Sweet 16
$100K Big 8
$100K Final 4, extra $100K Final Game
$200K National Championship
Those numbers are kinda high but not likely to reach inj the next 2 years but hopefully we do and will be well worth the money for bringing in fan generated revenues.
That is about $1M Salary and $800K in incentives if he wins SEC and the NC, which is $1.8M and well worth a title. The average NCAA tournament coach made $1.4M this year, one who wins it should get paid.
If he ever does win the title, then he should have a clause to pay him what the avg of the top 5 coaches make, then he will bank some real dough in the neighborhood of $3-4M per year, however, that is not counting Rick Pitino's $7.5M salary, which would put him near $5M per year.
Or, he may just sit tight with his $1M if he does not reach the incentives, build a good team in the next few years, then get a bonus if he is still the coach every 3 years where he would receive a bonus of $900,000, that would put him at an avg of $1.3M year.
Now, if he wins something big or just brings the LSU BB team and the Pmac to life, then gives him a raise and locks him in... LSU pays him the base of $1.8M per year with bonuses to keep him here to start winning titles, then he would go to the $4M year salary and bonuses.

Why does it matter what he make or what he made at his last job, let the man make his money.

he makes 200k now or something
I think he makes 440k now. I don't have a link but it was posted a few days ago that he was given a 7 year contract extension after 2010 season for 440k.
I think he'll be making about what Trent was.

I am pretty much convinced to give Jones the benefit of the doubt. If he tanks, daddy dale, Collis and Joe can all depart on the same ship.

Because it continues to set the financial bar higher for unproven hires in the future.

This.
And why people give a shite how much coaches make is beyond me. Doesn't cost you a cent.

It looks bad for LSU to pay Sun Belt money for a profitable program
Jones will make a salary in line with the rest of the SEC coaches. Somewhere in the 1.2-1.5 range. He got the job, he has the pressure, he deserves the money that goes with the responsibility

Yeah, as well as this guy is selling the program so far it is hard not to want to give him a shot. If John Brady can get recruits to come to LSU I want to see what this guy can do. He will sell a lot of guys on the up tempo offense, combined with his personality. I would bet on that. I didn't want him before we hired him, but the more I read and hear from him and what the other coaches think of him and N. Texas fan base thinks of him, I'm excited about LSU B ball for the first time in a long while.

I would love to hear your logic on how a coaches salary doesn't cost us, the TAF boosters/Season ticket holders a cent?
I'll be honest...
I've bought in and will back the man as long as he continues you to earn that backing. Bottomline, there is no need to pay top half of SEC money until he earns that type of money.
1 million sounds like a good start and base the rest off of incentives. You can always bump a salary up the 2nd or 3rd year. The problem lies with finding you can't bump the salary down.
ETA: That won't happen tho. His hiring process was a favor(not saying anything about him, just the way it was handled) and his salary will be a favor as well IMHO... I predict 1.4million

I could care less what he makes, I do know one thing he will earn it, and we will see a much improved program with first tier talent and the guys we have now will improve and will want to play for the guy.
