he's literally our 7th best pitcher. He's pushing a 5.00 ERA.
And could still probably shutout Texas Southern.
Once again...
It's. Texas. fricking. Southern.

Source tells me Friday start will be Poche' 100%. He's the only one that has proven he can go on short rest. Look at last year's regional for example, Utah Valley and Rice

I just can't grasp burning Poche against a SWAC team with a losing record when you have a perfectly capable Gilbert right there.
If, for some unfathomable reason, you lose that game one you now will have to play an extra game. An extra game is a burden on whole staff, or at least a starter/some bullpen/closer (starter could be johnny wholestaff).
So a short, easy game for Poche has little effect down the road where the risk has a much larger effect, if it were to come to fruition. ETA: with the assumption Poche will have a short, easy game.
Not saying I agree with either move, but I can see that being a legitimate argument.
There's also the "momentum" argument. LSU was/is a hot team and stayed hot through the SEC tourney. By starting a proven starter and increasing the chances of a blowout (as opposed to a win with more scoring by the opponent) that "hot feeling" will continue back home at The Box. That is also legitimate, and baseball people do think that way. It could be nothing more than "we're playing with confidence, let's not risk eroding it one bit".

Hopefully LSU can jump to a 8 run lead in 2 innings and all this talk is for nothing. Poche throws 30 pitches, gets a W and we see him next Saturday.

In 2004, LSU actually hosted a super regional when they were originally paired with Rice's regionally, the #6 national seed. A&M ended up winning our regional, due in large part to the fact that Texas Southern upset us (the defending national champions) in our opening game.
Phil Humber, our ace (and widely regard to be the worst pitcher in MLB history to throw a perfect game), gave up 4 ER to TSU and the rest was history.
The game was also marred by two lightning delays, which could happen tomorrow.
There is definitely merit to not pitching your best against TSU. Just saying that it can bite you in the arse.

I assume that would be the plan for CPM. Curious though. Does the same apply for a weather delay? Weather delay before 5 innings with the lead good enough for the victory. Who would get the win in that situation?

Another factor is with the rain this weekend we don't know if play will be suspended after 4 innings due to a 2 hour rain delay. Do you bring in a new pitcher after.

Rantz could win Friday, not sure why we'd burn Poche but I'm not questioning PM... he's pulling all the right levers right now.

Well, we burned him against Utah Valley last year. It's a real possibility if weather cooperates.

Yep and as usual, for absolutely no reason

Good bump. No idea what he was watching. It was a strange post because his normal ire is directed solely at Mainieri.

Pitching rotation worked...maybe not perfectly but it worked and guys that needed work got work.
