If an 8-4 team wins a conference
Whole lot more likely that all 5 conferences have champions with 2 or fewer losses and the teams that finish 3,4,5 in the final CFP rankings all have the same # of losses and the committee has a tough decision to make....see Big 12 2014

As you said, it is likely that all 5 champs will have 2 or fewer losses. But certainly not guaranteed. Therefore a conference shouldn't be guaranteed to secure a spot in playoffs. See the 2008 Virginia Tech Hokies. That year, no team in the ACC deserved to go to a BCS Bowl, much less a playoff game.

Then why is Ohio State ahead of Penn State?
because Penn State has two loses, and one was a drubbing by Michigan. None of Penn State's wins (outside of OSU) were against top flight teams.
Ohio State pounded Oklahoma on the road, utterly destroyed Nebraska, and beat Wisconsin. Three quality wins there, and two were completely dominant.
So rankings aren't based on a single game. They're based on an entire body of work.

Point made. Well, maybe the guaranteed spot for a conference champ could be only if the conference champ finishes in the top 15 of the final rankings.

That's better than just having a carte blanche automatic spot. But to me it's easier to just have the top 8 teams. What if ACC champ was 15, in this scenario. So the playoffs would be 1-7 ranked teams and #15 Va Tech? And leave out #8 Whoever, who went 11-1 in the regular season and lost in their championship game? See what I'm saying? I hate that division winners in the NFL are guaranteed a home game too. That's stupid, I think.

Then #15 Va Tech would be the 8th seed in the playoff bracket.

There would be 3 at-large spots available....so 11-1 plus a loss in the conference title game should still be high enough ranked to be one of the 3 at-large spots.
I'm just wishful thinking. Would be great to have playoffs expanded to 8. Possible to get every major conference champ in and makes the final 2 weeks of the season even more interesting with having 15 teams or so still fighting for playoff spots instead of just a 6-7.

I agree, I want 8 teams too. Right now it is 4, all at large. I wish it would expand to 8, all at large. Exact same criteria and voting they do right now. Just 1-8 instead of 1-4. 99% of the time all 5 power 5 conf champs would make it. But in those years when a conf is really down, they are rightfully left out. My opinion.

But that's the problem - how to determine the top 8? It's extremely subjective, and with only a 12 game season and little inter-league play, it's very hard to compare teams from different conferences.
So it's better to spread the risk, and reward conference champs around the country, to give automatic bids to conference champs, with 3 at-large bids to others.
It seems very fair, and keeps intact the importance of winning your conference, but still gives a chance to very good teams that didn't.

Also curious about Clemson being ahead of Louisville. Louisville has the better loss. When he answers head to head, then ask him why Ohio State is ahead of Penn State.
because Ohio State has fewer losses than Penn State
