$23,000 50 years ago is $860,000 in 2021. Its the same. Milk was .10c a gallon. Now its $3.50. its all relative. Sorry for those who cant understand basic economics and inflation
Good lord is this stupid and ignorant. $1 50 years ago is worth about $6-7 now. That is to say, $23K in 1971 is a max of $161K now. You also just made up the milk price. It most assuredly was not 10 cents in 1971.

What Holtthh doesn't acknowledge is that bowl games today have been rendered much, much less significant than they used to be, due to the presence of the playoffs and the completely absurd expansion of the number of bowl games. Add in the huge difference in inflation adjusted dollars at stake for the better players and it's a wholly different situation. I'm of his generation (more or less) and I couldn't disagree more about the loyalty of players to their schools, especially relative to the loyalty of schools to the players.

Then quit feeling sorry for yourself. Milk was $1.32 a gallon in 1970, not $0.10.

$23000 in 1970 now worth $164,762.99

You only missed it by a little over $695,000!

More like $0.50 a gallon according to this site.

The difference in money, that's your answer.

In the 1970s, football players were smoking dope, shooting roids, chugging beer, and chasing tail. The percentage of players with "character" problems is the same as it is today.

Lou Holtz is full of shite.

Football players also played injured, including broken bones and they were also shooting painkillers to stay on the field. Let me know the next time a 21st century NFL player has 74 surgeries like Jim Otto.

Let me know which player that opts out you think can compare his character to this former player.

Players opting out are doing so for life changing money and opportunities.

Simply not true. Players are not getting injured at a rate that would justify the current trend. IMO they are getting bad advice from the snakes of the industry and walking out on relationships and opportunities they will never again receive or have the chance to live out.

What a joke. Athletes that have an opportunity to make millions and are exploited! Lol!

Your comments are a joke. How many millions of dollars do the schools and coaches and NCAA make while the players get nothing. They should share in the revenue that they help create. Why should they not. Meals and drinks. What a stupid thing to say.

50 years ago bowl games didn't count. Entire teams opted out all the time. Most notably Notre Dame.

If they aren’t playing for playoffs or a championship, the kids now a days feel like they are a waste of time. Expand the playoffs and you cut down on this!

that's really the only solution at this point. expand it to 12 teams and the bowl season means a LOT more.
