Do you think LSU & Louisville are fighting over the same kids?
Not the same kids, but the recruiting classes are more similar than you might think.
The last 3 recruiting cycles, Louisville had the 23rd, 3rd, and 13th ranked classes.
LSU had the 16th, 2nd and 19th classes.
That’s a negligible difference.
Now, maybe you could argue McDonnell is a better recruiter and would pull in better classes than Mainieri has, but you can’t really argue that he’s done more with less.

Dugas and DiGiacomo were not done any favors by their summer assignment. They both should have been in the Northwoods league instead of the Cape where they could play more regularly and develop better.
As it stands right now we've got Wes Toups scheduled to go to the Cape.
I think they're too aggressive with some of these guys.
These are the upcoming assignments I've found so far:
Name Sum Lg SL Team
Giovanni DiGiacomo Cape Cod Bourne
Tommy Biggs Perfect Game Saugerties
Cade Beloso Cape Cod Bourne
Alex Milazzo Valley Charlottesville
Mitchell Sanford Valley Charlottesville
Wes Toups Cape Cod Harwich
Will Safford Prospect Danville

And that speaks to LSU’s drop in play don’t you think?

Who is the future at LSU in terms of position players?
Cabrera is the “star”, and while he is formidable, he’s a B type prospect.
Look at the Junior class. He’s the only homegrown guy left.
Soph class has guys that can’t break into the bottom of a below average lineup. Beloso is a program guy. That’s fine. But no star power.
Doughty looks like a guy in the Freshman class. They’ll lose Hampton to football eventually. Travinski & Arnold could be something in time I guess.
But where are the dudes? The state of the program in regards to position players is going to be a problem really soon. You can only patch so much with JUCO guys.
Cabrera has shown flashes (this weekend included) of being a first round prospect, but he also has hit his fair share of slumps (though I think last year was due to his injury).
I think Beloso is more than just a "program guy." He might not project well at the next level, but he has the potential to be a great player here. I also wouldn't write off Gio. He could make a big jump at the plate next year ala Andrew Stevenson.
You didn't even mention the best player in this freshman class so far. Milazzo is a stud behind the plate and has shown that he can hit. He might wind up being one of the best catchers to ever play here. Doughty and Hampton both have the tools as well.

It's hard to say. There are really only a few teams consistently in the top 10 in recruiting rankings in baseball: Vanderbilt is private and can offer more scholarships than public universities. Same with Miami. And Florida is in one of the most fertile baseball recruiting grounds.

Can you honestly say the offense improves next year when you lose Cabrera, Mathis & Garza? It’s not even any good this year to begin with
Man I like Milazzo, but he’s going to be a defensive guy first. His offense won’t be a negative but there are holes in his approach
Beloso will eventually need to start pulling the ball for some power. He hasn’t been bad but the shift is fricking with him. He wants to hit everything to the left side & LSU needs more than that out of him.
And I’m not hating on Cabrera. He certainly can be a high pick but I don’t think he’s going to carry you in a sense that some of LSU’s past team leaders have.
Again, have some foresight & see where this is going.

It's going to depend greatly on how the freshman improve during the offseason. As you said, it hasn't been great this year, so it's not a high bar.

I disagree. I think he has looked like the most polished freshman at the plate. He still swings and misses at a lot of breaking pitches, but he has shown the ability to hit the fastball when he gets one, which cannot be said for the other freshman.

Agreed. Beloso has hit the ball hard this year...unfortunately, most teams have played him perfectly. He needs to stop trying to "beat the shift" and start trying to drive balls. He hit a ball yesterday that likely would have left the park on Friday or Saturday. I think we see his HR numbers explode once the weather warms up a bit.

Could you do a better job than Paul???????
I highly doubt it so STFU. It's baseball.....

Beloso hits a lot of liners and balls straight up the middle; seems off for a guy his size in today’s game. I get that he pulls the ball often but he’s not a guy that is up there with the HR, BB, or K mindset.

He hit 10hrs last year, and was much more apt to pull the ball. I think that correlates

This would be the starting list is you want a proven winner. These are teams and coaches who have made at least as many CWS appearances as Mainieri starting with 2009.

Florida State 4 visits, 0 titles Mike Martin -Retired
Louisville 4 visits, 0 titles Dan McDonnell
LSU 4 visits, 1 title Mainieri
Texas Tech 4 visits, 0 titles Tim Tadlock
Vanderbilt 4 visits, 2 titles Tim Corbin
North Carolina 4 visits, 0 titles Mike Fox
TCU 5 visits, 0 titles Jim Schlossnagle
Texas 4 visits, 0 titles David Pierce (1 visit) Augie had the other 3
Virginia 4 visits, 1 title Brian O'Connor

To me, this has been the biggest problem the last 2 seasons. And it’s not his fault, really, but I think they were expecting him to make a Bleday-type jump last year and to be competing for the Golden Spikes award for the 2nd straight season. His being about the same guy he was as a freshman is not what they were counting on.

Ok, ok.. enough joking around. Time for serious candidates in this thread.
