Baton Rouge – LSU Baseball’s Purple-Gold World Series continued on Thursday night at Alex Box Stadium, as behind solid pitching and an offensive slugfest, the Purple defeated the Gold 12-4 to take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

The Gold can still win the three-game series if its defeats the Purple by nine or more runs on Friday night in Game 3.

For Game 3, right-hander Landon Marceaux will take the ball for the Purple, and the Gold will hand the ball to right-hander Will Hellmers. Game 3 is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. CT.

The Purple got on the scoreboard early and often against the Gold squad. Back-to-back walks to Drew Bianco and Collier Cranford put Purple in business in the second. A stolen base and a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position, who then came around to score on a single by Braden Doughty.

Two more runs scored for Purple as a result of Gold’s starter Ty Floyd hitting his 25-pitch limit for the inning.

Four more runs came across to score for Purple in the third, three more in the fourth, and one in the fifth, coming from a solo home run off the bat of Gavin Dugas. Dugas went 2-4 with that solo shot and a double.

“Gavin (Dugas) had a great night tonight,” said LSU coach Paul Mainieri. “He smoked a double down the line, hit a home run, and drove in a couple of important runs.”

The 12 runs were more than enough for the pitchers from the Purple squad. Starter Jaden Hill worked past a challenging first inning, which resulted in one run scoring for Gold. Hill pitched three innings, giving up four hits and one run while recording two strikeouts.

I thought Jaden threw the ball as well as he has all fall,” said Mainieri. “He was 94-97 miles per hour and threw a lot of strikes. I thought he looked really good and the best he’s pitched during fall practice.”

Trent Vietmeier was first out of the pen for Purple. Vietmeier went two innings, gave up one hit, one run, and struck out two. Matthew Beck closed out the final two innings for Purple, giving up two runs on three hits, but he retired the side in order in the seventh to close out the ball game.

Gold was led offensively by Tre’ Morgan and Cade Beloso, who both notched two hits. Morgan went 2-3 with two singles and two runs scored. Beloso also went 2-3 with a single and a double.

This is hard for me to understand as well. College athletics is a business and they are all losing money. It would just make business sense to promote baseball that you do actually make some money off of. Why not keep your fan base excited about LSU baseball and promote the sport by doing something fairly simple and inexpensive.

It wreaks of an executive decision type thing from PM to keep things under wraps.

Lester, I think you could be right about keeping things under wraps. Since we will have a plethora of new starters this coming season, it would be an advantage to keep their strengths and weaknesses from becoming obvious to opponents before the season starts. Same thing applies to new pitchers.

Hill will be fine. He's a gamer. It's not a surprise that he needs to work his stamina up. Even if he proves to be unable to get his stamina up, he'll be a piece of the bullpen to drastically shorten games. I still like the thought of him on Saturday or Sunday, where he can go against a #2 or #3 that we can maybe get a lead on and go to the bullpen early if he tires. On Friday, you might struggle to score early and up in the pen chasing.

Hellmers is making a case for innings...on the mound, in the lineup, on the field, or all of the above.

I don’t know what it is about wreaks and reeks, but they seem to be used wrong more than half the time. A monkey could get it right 50% of the time.

Pitching and defense always usually gets ready but year in and year out lsu hitting has been the missing link. Unless lsu hits, it will be another what would have been a losing sec season last year, saved by covid. This year won't change much imo. Same coaching, same results.

Cotton is well respected on this board. There are lot of goof balls that participate very little on this board by just taking drive by shots at Mainieri. So you probably did hit a nerve.

I don't want to turn this into another Mainieri thread because honestly that should be done after the season plays out in my opinion but I do realize a few things about Mainieri.

He is not perfect and some complacency would be normal for his age and career ambition. I have come to realize however that he knows more about baseball than anyone on this board.

The fact is the AD is not going to fire a hall of fame Coach to bring in an unknown commodity. If that new Coach falters, the AD's reputation will take a serious hit. The AD will play it safe with the hall of fame Coach, who happens to have a talented roster until Mainieri choses to retire or we are so bad that he forced to. Let the season play out, after it is over then we can discuss if it time for a new Coach.

Your comment about hitting is a valid point. The pitching is going to be really good in the SEC, if you can't hit that SEC pitching you will be in trouble. There is plenty of reason for optimism though.

This freshmen class is looking very underrated. I say this because the big names of the class seem to be as advertised but the lesser names are looking better than the big names. Morgan, Safford, Hellmers, Edwards are way better than originally thought. This Freshmen class is really going to solidify the hitting.

We all know Beloso is the real deal. Cade Doughty this fall has been our best hitter. Gio is hot and cold but if he finds consistency, he will be a factor. Bianco, Dugas, Travinski and Hampton could all turn into hitters teams fear. Crews is the real deal. Morgan has already proven himself. Safford can hit. Arnold might beat out Cranford at SS because of being a better hitter. Then you have guys like Drost, Sanford and the new catcher that can hit. Milazzo is not a great hitter but he is no automatic out. We have too much competition with the position players. If you don't hit, you will probably be replaced with someone that can.

He’s not wrong. LSU had 2-3 recruiting classes that have been zeros on the hitting side, and it has showed

I never said he was wrong

The team has to hit better. That’s obvious. It’s also obvious that there are a ton of people on this board who only comment to talk shot about Mainieri and it’s fricking annoying. Either contribute to the conversation at hand or shut the frick up. Repeatedly regurgitating an opinion about Mainieri adds absolutely nothing to any thread.

I agree, that is why I said he had a valid point. Factor in that we are going to face better pitching this year.

I just think between the two Cades, the incoming freshmen that are showing out and hopefully a couple of the many upperclassmen with potential, will alleviate their games. This should be a good hitting team. The unknown is a part of the fun. It's exciting seeing who is going to emerge as LSU's next great player or great team.

I don’t like Mainieri, but we don’t need to hear the same shite in every thread from people that have nothing else to contribute.
