"You never want to assume anything, you got to compete every single day and continue to earn your teammates trust and respect," Etling said. "You have to earn everything. All you think about is improving every day. If you think you deserve something, that's when you get beat, that's when something bad happens.

quote:

Etling is well-liked and respected by his teammates, and not just because pound-for-pound he's one of the toughest competitors on the team.

It's for what he said about making sure "the quarterback position plays well as a room and as a unit."

Etling is a team player to the bone. If he would have lost his starting job to Brennan or Narcisse, it's a good bet he wouldn't have acted any different than when he was named starter.

He desires to improve himself and those around him daily. He wants to win, so he's all about helping the entire quarterback room grow.

quote:

"It's like your arm falling asleep and getting tingly," Etling said the numbness. "During games, it (the leg) would just fall asleep. It would be random. I was like, 'Oh God, not now.' You couldn't control it.

"I'd use all arm (to throw). I couldn't get my shoulder and hip through throws like I wanted. I'd just sling (passes) across my body. It's a bad habit that I've been working hard to break."

quote:

The last time Etling was on Texas soil, as he will be a couple of Saturdays from now, he completed 20-of-28 passes for 323 yards and two TDs in LSU's 54-39 Thanksgiving night romp at Texas A&M.

Etling may not be the most talented QB, but this kid is a leader, and is tough as nails. LSU can and will win with this kind of player taking snaps.

Bouncing back after that double spearing play against Auburn that busted his face mask tells me all I need to know about him.

He's more than capable of leading the Tigers to the playoffs in the right system. I hope Canada's system is the right one. It feels like it so far. We'll find out soon enough!

If his back was that bad then that is great sign for things to come. Also explains the noodle arm

I feel like Mett cared. See 2013 Bama when he basically had to crawl off the field. He was tough and a good competitor for LSU

Yep and what I like about him is that he's not worried about what others are saying. He's not even aware. He's just going to go out and get the job done to the best of his abilities while leading for his teammates. It's exactly what you want in a championship QB.

I really don't know where all this talk of him being a bad QB is coming from. Obviously these people forget about Harris and company. Etling is light years ahead of them in his first 6months at LSU. This is his second year and not as a sophomore but as a senior. He knows what to expect, and how defense's will defend him. Huge advantage for a senior QB in this type of offense.

Etlings going to have a big year. In the 20's in TDs and around 6 INTs IMO. The Bama game was really the only game where you could say he looked out matched and that wasn't all his fault if any at all. Idk if Joe Montana would have had a good game in that one. The OL will have to pick things up this year and if they don't it's time to go hunt another OL coach who can recruit with the best. GT

From a stagnant passing game over the last 4 or 5 years. Two things were happening here. We had some bad luck with QBs that just were not great and we had them in a system that was very unfriendly to them. Most of the passing scheme the past few years were low percentage completion passes. Lots of 3rd and longs and deep ball passes.

Because of these things it's just become "cool" to say that all LSU QBs suck and have no shot at getting it done.

ESPN has latched onto this, and the talking points will continue until proven false.

Etling is a tough as nails gamer. He may not have all the talent, but has double the heart of any LSU QB in the Miles era, and that kind of play will be successful in the Canada offense.

Last season, LSU had the consensus number one offensive line in the country. The offensive line wasn't the problem in last year's game. The old antiquated Miles' offense we were forced to run last season was the problem. As Alabama's defense obviously knew the plays we were running before the ball was snapped.

Other teams, which forced Alabama to play honestly, because of their offensive schemes faired far better with far poorer offensive lines than we had because the offense they ran kept Alabama on their heels guessing.

Hence, Coach Grimes is not the problem, the old Less Miles' antiquated offense was the problem. He's a perfectly fine offensive line coach and a good recruiter. Just look how the boys he recruited last year are performing in this year's fall camp so far.

Indeed, I'm looking forward this year to LSU playing with Coach Canada's new offense, which is designed to keep defenses off balance, back on their heels, and guessing. It might just be what we need to finally beat Alabama again.

That is tough to play through, and it took a lot of guts to do that. For that reason, I believe he is and will be a much better QB than many people think. Played hurt last year in a modified offense, and did a decent job under the circumstances. He gets the benefit of the doubt from me.

I had a spinal condition in high school that caused me pinched nerves in both legs and caused this sensation in both of my legs. It was so severe that it ended my football career. I know firsthand how painful this can be and anyone (including the down voter to the OP posting) who doesn't agree, should experience a few minutes of this pain to know how it can debilitate an individual.

Danny is a tough guy, a Tiger, and I wish him all the best as the winner he is!

I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt too. I think it's been so long since we've had a real offensive coordinator that we have forgotten what a working offense that tries to utilize all of its talent looks like. Ensminger did a good job last year considering the circumstances and was able to work miracles. I think this year will be much better and a lot of the talking heads will be surprised. Still, until we beat Bama, no one is going to give us any love. All of these preseason polls are crap.

Etling got a bad rap. He never was a mediocre quarterback and his winning record at LSU proves it. I think a lot of the Brandon Harris fans, along with people pissed off that Less Miles had been canned, started that rumor, but nevertheless, his record and his numbers don't lie. He is one of the best quarterbacks so far that LSU has had since 2007, and he is going to do a good job this season again.

I don't expect him to have an NFL future but any improvement over last year and this offense has a chance to be special.
