Like others have said, it's all about getting the ball to the back quicker. But I also understand the concern about mishandling the toss. Cost/reward type of thing, and it seems to work pretty well for LSU. I don't mind the toss.

I'd say a messed up pitch might happen once this year. I don't see a qb doing a bad pitch on where he knows he's going with the ball.

And i hope you are correct.

I tend to agree with this as well. But thus far it seems work, why stop now. One thing has been clear in the first two games however. When LSU goes "hurry-up", you can bet the house that play is coming.

I was gonna start a thread about how much better I liked the quick toss over the long handoff.

Dude there is a way higher chance for a bad transition from QB to RB in the standard QB stick ball in gut of RB running play....

Quality thoughts, but i'd like you to tell me how often you see a toss up the middle in every football game you watch.

LSU runs that play too much in their hurry up offense, its very predictable. Teams will pick up on it later in the year. Also, it is a big risk with not much reward. The back has to watch the ball until it gets in his hands. Handoff gets him the ball while he watches the defense. Also, the threat of playaction is taken away with this play. Don't like it, but thats just me

If its so great for vision, why even use the QB? Is he just necessary to keep the Safeties honest? Just put the RB in Wildcat(gains a split second in vision), and instaed of a QB and a fullback, just put 2 fullbacks(Stampley and Copeland) back there to block for the RB.

Amongst other valid reasons mentioned, DE's see the pitch and don't collapse in on the tackles quite as hard. They're conditioned to see a toss and play the off-tackle assignment.

RB gets the ball quicker and has longer to make the decision on which hole to hit and they can hit it harder. Not that hard to figure out really.

This.

Also, It effects the Dline and LBs when they see a pitch it could throw them off even for a split second. Enough to open up a hole a little more. As minor as it sounds every little bit helps.

Can someone give me a good reason why a the toss up the middle is better than the traditional handoff?

What type of benefits does it offer?

He gets the ball quicker so he can read and hit the hole quicker.

If we don't toss the ball to Ridley on the last play of the game against Tennessee last year, he probably isn't able to make the first unblocked defender miss and get into the end zone.

Offense puts up 40+ points in consecutive weeks and we still have rantards bitching about ONE play that we run.

I tend to disagree. With Jordan out there we could call the fake and he he would just roll out and if wr isnt open he takes off and runs and we gain yards either way.

He has the pitch before the QB would even be halfway there. Thus having more acceleration and room to see what's open. Think about it, he's getting the ball steps back instead of right behind the hole he is set to go in.
