JD PicKell reveals where Myles Brennan stands in LSU quarterback competition

quote:

“First and foremost, you have Myles Brennan. Six-year senior; he’s gritty. He hasn’t been healthy his whole time at LSU, but he has stuck with this program. As an LSU fan, you feel for Miles Brennan because he’s the guy that has stuck with the ship no matter the condition and the biggest plus with him is he’s proven he can be successful when he’s healthy. He had 430 yards and four touchdowns against Missouri, but he’s had some bad luck as well, injury-wise.”

JD PicKell: What Jayden Daniels needs to do to win LSU's quarterback battle

quote:

“The second player, we’re gonna talk about Jayden Daniels. He transferred from Arizona State and made headlines when there was that Twitter video going around about all his former teammates cleaning out his locker,” said PicKell. “That’s a bad look for him. I don’t love that; I think that says a lot about Arizona State, and it says something about Jayden Daniels.”

Miles Brennan

If I had a dollar for how many times I've seen his named misspelled either on TD or in articles, I could pull a Texas and buy the best OL in the country. Sheeshhh

I’ll save y’all some time. He picks all 3 to start. Says Myles is the first and safest choice. Daniel’s is too athletic to not give a shot at some point. He believes Nussmeier has the momentum and will be the starter by years end.

Just against Bama.
He was put in a bad spot in many games his first year. So, I don't hold that against him.

That offense scored over 30 ppg, had there been a semblance of the defense they had before and after that year, people wouldn’t have worried about the pick six’s. The dual DC’s was a disaster.

Pre 2008 we would use many multiple receiver sets and throw the ball all over the field. Post 2008 it was I formation toss dive.

I think BK really wanted Daniels to win the job. He’s the most like Ridder was from Cincinnati last year and would have made Denbrock’s job of installing his offense easier. And of all the QB’s tools, his speed is both the most dynamic (I think he runs like 21 mph in pads which is scooting’) and the most consistent (speed travels and doesn’t slump). How much they value that is part of the question. Because the 3 canned things they’re looking for—whether it’s Kelly, Denbrock or Sloan talking—are:

1) someone who can make good decisions and take care of the football
2) someone who can get the ball in the hands of the playmakers
3) someone who can not only extend plays, but be a playmaker themselves

A lot of that is generic coach speak—every coach wants that—and could be applied to all or any of the 3 of the QBs in the running for the starting gig (assuming Howard redshirts). Not that any or all 3 QBs do all of those 3 things better than the others (I’m sure some do, we just don’t know it definitively), but Kelly can justify any of the 3 starting to the fan base:

“‘Fill in the blank’” won the job because he proved that he can make good decisions, get the ball in the hands of our play making WRs, and if he has to extend plays long enough with his feet that he can make plays downfield with his arm.”

I tailored that more to Myles just to prove that they can spin it any way they want to fit all 3, even though we don’t necessarily consider Myles extending plays to be one of his strengths. Anyway, I think they came into spring thinking it was a 2-horse race between Daniels and Brennan and hoping Daniels would take the job. But not only was he not as good of a passer as they hoped (though if they were working on his footwork, that could explain what we saw in the spring and could be corrected come September), but I think Nuss legitimately forced his way into the competition unexpectedly. And I think it legitimately caught them off guard and put them off plan. Now, I think they’ve probably talked themselves into a new plan and who they want to take charge and win the job in the fall—could be any of the 3, but I still think it’s Daniels right now—but I don’t think they’re married to it/him and are willing to start any of the 3 if they think they’ve separated themselves. But I also don’t think they’ll be married to him(whoever it is) that long either if he struggles and won’t be afraid to pull the trigger, especially after we’ve lost a game or 2.

TL;DR —1)I think they wanted Daniels to win the job in the spring and he didn’t, 2)Nuss unexpectedly played it into a 3-man race, 3) which may have weirdly made Brennan the favorite now to start, but 4) whoever it is will have a short leash, and 5) whether due to performance or injury, I would not be at all surprised if all 3 started a game this year. Basically, we don’t know shite.

Bonus—Now that you can play in 4 games and still redshirt, I don’t think Howard starting a game or 2 is off the table if certain scenarios play out.
