Because this is how the SEC looks at it. At the end of the season, if the SEC records are equal, they are considered co-division champions, and a tiebreaker is used only to determine which plays in the SEC championship game. So blame the SEC.

That would make sense if the tie breaker had gone down to a coin flip. But not after they had played each other head to head and LSU beat them on their home field after spotting them a pick 6 to start the game.

Putting this up in their stadium is the banner equivalent of a participation trophy.

If LSU fans can buy 68000 jello shots in Omaha, surely someone can buy a couple hundred Atlanta street maps to pass out in the Grove.

If you didn’t play in the SECCG, you didn’t win the division.

Nothing else needs to be said.

As a previous poster said many teams would claim it too since they tied for it and lost the SECCG slot on the tiebreaker

Technically. But what was each teams record within the division?

Really if 2 teams have the same overall conference record, the head to head winner should be the division champ. No co champ BS

Who gives a shite about a western division title ? If they were the champs and we beat them in Oxford, that makes us the true champs. It’s a shame that their football program is so dismal that they think it so wonderful to claim a co-championship of a division.

I’ve never understood the concept of co-division champs. I mean.. we have a tiebreaker. What is the point of a tiebreaker if not to break the ties?

I get that the tiebreaker decides who does to the SECCG but it just seems silly to me that it wouldn’t also determine who is the actual division champ.

It’s OK. There’s this app where you can pair your team up with others and make an argument for being national champs every year.

We should run out of the visitor locker room with the cheerleaders flying our 2003 National Champions flag.

We beat them in 03' and where National Champs in 03'?

This should be team bulletin board material !

I think that time has passed. Half of our team wasn't even born yet when this happened and the other half was still in diapers. I have a feeling they don't care.

In 2003, there were division tri-champions in the SEC East...each of the three teams had beaten one of the others and lost to one of the others. Using head-to-head results couldn't work under your scenario.

which school has the Waterford crystal football (Coaches/AFCA National Championship Trophy) prominently displayed in their trophy case, USC or LSU?

It's the rule, even if I agree it is sort of silly. The SEC has done this sort of thing even before there were divisions, in fact, they used to have a committee determine the winner, or technically who represented the SEC in the Sugar Bowl, if the season ended tied. Part of that probably goes back to when there was no requirement for how many SEC games you played so it was conceivable two teams ended up with identical records having never played each other and having identical records vs common opponents.

Eh, they haven't got much so a consolation prize may be in order.
