Ok lets call it... do we think they are using the refs to influence games?

So many missed penalties the last few weeks. BYU mugged NDs receiver in the end zone and nothing.
FSU ties up the game and phantom holding call.
Then the 24 team playoff is announced?
To me its clear they want to pump these upsets and ratings in the regular season then all the big names still make the playoffs anyways so they can get the ratings again in the playoffs.

I felt like the BYU ND 1 second debacle was an example of conference favoring it's member versus an independent

If refs aren't used by the NFL/cfb conferences to passively control outcomes, then it feels like the next obvious answer is gambling.

Makes no sense. An 11-1 Miami is a playoff lock. One loss doesn’t kill your anymore like it could in the 4 team playoff era. I just think referees have become lazy and rely too much on replay and even then they still get it wrong. At least the ACC has a transparent replay system where you can hear everything being discussed. The SEC wants to hide and keep it a secret.

No question. Becoming more like sports entertainment than a real sport. WWE-esq.

It matters for seeding. Miami getting the bye would benefit them.

quote:167 billion was legally gambled in 2025 on sports. 33 billion of that was on ncaa football. sport books took at least 16 billion from bettors. we haven't even discussed tv deals and marketing revenue.

if you think that amount of money exchanging hands doesn't have an effect on the outcome of games then you aren't a serious person.
besides that, if you have two eyes you see it clear as day.

That’s a whole different discussion. 12-1 Miami who wins ACC is getting a top 4 seed.

Gambling is the biggest issue and it's only going to get worse.

Yea but you seriously think they arent losing another game if they cant beat FSU at home?
The ACC all but guaranteed Miami a top 4 seed now.

The SEC won’t even let you hear the discussion
ACC is far more transparent on replay. This shouldn’t upset anyone.

What does it matter when the "ESPN rules expert" cant even figure out what the refs are thinking on the field. Half the time the dude looks like a total dumbass when the refs come up with the exact opposite of what he is saying.
At least half if not more of questionable calls that go to replay end up with no one knowing how the frick the refs came to that conclusion.

What are the other options? That they just suck?
It’s nearly as big a deal that they flat out suck without the leagues stepping in to fix it.

Their only other test is a coddled and overrated Notre Dame. Losing one game doesn’t hurt you anymore.

it astounds me that people can see those numbers and assume none of the entities involved would put their thumb on the scale.

Its obvious. NFL and NBA players have been betting on their own teams. Hell even Alabamas baseball coach was doing it.

"ESPN rules expert"
He’s irrelevant and has zero jurisdiction or power. He’s there to provide an opinion he’s not the judge jury and executioner. You are triggered by the wrong person. We need transparency in replay for every conference across the board. If anyone is trying to ‘rig’ games it’s the SEC.

They lose to FSU then lose to ND what happens? They dont get a bye.
Now they can lose to ND and it doesnt matter.

I agree we need transparency, but the ACC claims to have it and still trick fricked FSU.
Everyone that saw that knows they got hosed.
