Opening night he usually goes with his most veteran starter, which is a little more murky than usual. Maybe Labas?

Any possible surprises that could become a weekend starter?

Devin Fontenot, Blake Money, Theo Millas

Devin Fontenot,
Really like him as that shut down guy at the end but he was phenomenal in that extended outing I think against Florida state

I wouldnt mind him having a shot as a weekend starter if someone falters / gets injured

I can fap to Hill/Labas/Fontenot

Could also be an agreement to bring him back but help him up his draft stock by being a starter

Fontenot is a 2 pitch guy, reliever unless an injury happens

Project would you agree that we need to keep Fontenot as our back of the bullpen closer?
Marceaux in the transfer portal?

I don’t believe in closers. I think you want your best pitchers throwing the most innings you can get out of them. Limiting Fontenot to just save situations is limiting the positive impact he could have on the team.

I think this may hold up better over the course of a 162 game MLB season but over 56 games I need a very good reliever who I save for the highest pressure innings of the season.
Now I don’t necessarily agree with having your best reliever only ever throw in the 9th inning with a 3 run lead. It could be a bases loaded situation in the 6th. Or starting a regional game. Or up by one in the 9th. But you have to have a pressure guy and in order to do that he can’t be one of your 4 normal starters.

Except for Rick Greene and Barry Manuel, when Skip wanted to close an important game(CWS), he normally used a starter to close.

In the current world of pitch counts and 5 days of rest you can’t really do that over the course of a full season anymore.

Who would you close to start the year?
4-3 game in the 9th
You’re gonna way Beck aren’t you

If Hill is healthy and they believe he can be a starter he will be the ace next season.

In that instance I’d use Fontenot unless there was a high leverage situation earlier in the game and he was needed. I just don’t agree with saving a guy for a situation that may not materialize.

I see we agree on the “closer” role after all.
I just think you need a bullpen ace even if it causes your rotation to be slightly weaker.
I wanted Hess in the bullpen but moving him out of the rotation would’ve decimated our rotation so we needed to keep him in there. We didn’t have anyone else who could take his place as a starter
This year even if Fontenot is a better starter than Labas or Marceaux. Both of those guys have show that they can be decent starters. So even if Fontenot is “great” as a starter I’d still prefer him to be a bullpen guy instead of starting ahead of the “good” guys.
I hope that made sense.

I see what your saying.
I’ve always been pro save one best arms for close saves.
But that’s just me.
Off topic but why aren’t people including Marceaux in the rotation?
