I got to watch the whole game staying up till 1:30 in the morning and couldn't have left more impressed by this team.

We built up a 7 point lead in the 2nd half which Michigan kept nipping away at until going on a10-0 run and ultimately getting up on us 68-59 with just 5:11 to go. At that point I was like, "Well it was nice while it lasted"...knowing this is when Johnny's mentally weak teams would fold like a cheap tent and not respond to a bad swing. Then, something magical happened, Tremont Waters TOOK OVER. A true freshman just took over scoring 9 points the final 5 minutes with a RIDICULOUS from the floor assist to take the lead with a minute remaining. They hunkered down defensively after a poor half of basketball from that side and Michigan finished just 2 for 7 from the floor (once they got up 68-59) and we blocked a pair of shots. We assisted 4 of our final 5 makes from the floor.

This team didn't give up, they got together and said, we are going to win this, and went out and played like a champion.

Some thoughts on individual players:

Waters - Honestly not sure what you can say. He commands the floor like a senior and decided when we got down 68-59 he was taking over and helping us win this game. His PER through 3 games is almost 35 which is ridiculous level, that's playing 28+ minutes a game mind you. He's shooting 53% from 3 and 58% from the floor, these are ludicrous numbers for a 5'10 PG. He also has 6 assists to just 2.3 turnovers and if you watched last night like 2 of his 5 turnovers were simply him being a better player than our own guys and them not being able to handle his great vision passes. This guy will be All-SEC as a freshman, and guess what, he'll be here 4 years, too.

Sampson - Sampson's play through 3 games has been very good for him. His PER is around 38, again, ridiculous level. When he was in last night, he was making plays, but unfortunately, in a whistle happy game both ways, he made a few dumb fouls which helped get him fouled out with only 18 minutes on the night. Still, his ability to slam some ridiculous dunks home are momentum changers for this team. With Sampson, when the good comes, the bad still will rear it's head in some ways still right now, but he's starting to get it.

Epps - Epps hasn't been able to play much yet but watch out when he does (when fully recovered from injury). He only played 10 minutes against Samford but got 23 minutes last night and made the most of it with 14 points on just 6 of 7 shooting. It's almost like Michigan didn't watch any previous film on him (and there's plenty from previous seasons). They left him wide open from outside 18 feet or so and he took advantage draining almost all 7 of his shots. His PER is highest on the team at nearly 40 and that's primarily because he's not missing with 10 of his 13 shots made in just 33 minutes of action thus far (23 against the best team we've played).

Rachal - Dude has been PHENOMENAL for a true freshman nobody seemed to expect much from early on. Look, his offensive game will need some time to develop, but his defensive energy is off the charts and if he gets around the bucket he is finishing right now. For an offensively challenged guy, he's now 9 of 16 from the floor on the season. He missed some FTs last night (3 for 7; outside of him team was 13 for 16), but still added in 4 boards and 4 assists with ZERO turnovers. His PER is 26 which is crazy for a true freshman like him at the moment. I couldn't be more impressed by a true freshman nobody was expecting to play major role like he is early on. He is 6th in minutes on this team currently.

Combs - I think Combs play has been solid but unspectacular so far, still, he's been very efficient not forcing things when it's not there and has a 25 PER on the season. I think his injury limits him and he will struggle some when we go against these better teams with good true bigs that are 6'9, 6'10 he's trying to guard. Wagner was a mismatch for him and it showed. This is why he didn't play for long last night, but again, he didn't force things, didn't take a shot and didn't turn the ball over.

Sims - I've said this for a while about Sims, but he's the guy who can almost look like a star against the lesser teams and talent but somewhat disappear against the better teams and opponents. That's what happened last night, he put in 20 pretty uneventful minutes. Not getting many touches offensively only taking 2 shots, but again, not forcing things at all here, he didnt have a turnover all night. This is a theme I've already noticed with Wade's teams. If a guy is in a mismatch against them, they aren't trying to play the role of a hero. They try and give as quality minutes as they can. Sims PER on the season is 23, which is great. He put up great games against Samford and Alcorn St, and didn't become an issue in a game where he was overmatched. That's all you can ask out of him.

Mays - Mays did not play his best last night, Waters was the man instead, but he still didn't let things get out of hand by any means. After a big game against Samford, and a 5 assist 1 turnover effort against Alcorn. Mays had 8 points on 6 shots, 5 boards, 3 assists, 2 blocks a steal and 4 turnovers. It was a ho hum night for Mays, but still made some big plays. His PER on the season is 21, which is great.

Edwards - Last night was tough for him, as he was being guarded very well on the perimeter and never got a 3 point shot off, and that's what he's out there for. He only played 10 minutes, but again, things didn't fall off the rails for him in those 10 minutes, he had a pair of FTs, a board and turnover. He wasn't playing poorly, but you have to understand Edwards is not a dynamic player at all. He's a catch and shoot 3 point shooter. He will drain 3's all day long so long as he can get open looks. It's not always going to happen, just like last night. He's 4 for 8 on the season from 3 and only has 1 turnover in 56 minutes. He doesn't make plays, but he also doesn't force things at all. His PER on the year is 20 which is very good.

Reath - This is almost funny to say, but Reath has been the worst player among the regulars playing this year so far, but he's still been pretty good overall. 13 points on 5 of 9 last night but only 5 boards in 30 minutes. I think this is where Wade wants to see a lot more out of Reath, as he's only pulling down 6 boards a game right now when he has the ability to be a double double kind of guy. He needs to fight a little more for offensive boards and I think him giving us an extra opportunity or two more on the offensive glass could take him to the next level. His PER on the season is 19, which is on the very high end of above average.

So think about that for a second, our worst regular player thus far has a PER that's on the high end of above average. That is a huge difference compared to last season. It shows how much better we've been playing overall so far than last season. Less things being forced, and the right guys knowing when to turn it up.

I'm excited for tonight's matchup with Notre Dame. I think it's a winnable game, it will be extremely tough, but with the way we're playing, we can pull this out if things fall our way.

Great post. I enjoyed it.

I'm still shocked that Onwuasor, who averaged 24 points per game last year, can't even crack the rotation.

I figured he would be getting Rachal's minutes, and maybe even push Sampson for a starting position.

I didn't expect him to score 24 a game, but I was hoping a senior like him could get 12.

Good write up!

Unfortunately, I don't think Reath will ever be a great rebounder. Maybe when Epps is able to help out with size that will change, but I don't think he has the great anticipation it takes to be great on the glass. That's just an innate quality and I think Reath being such a raw player doesn't have it. He does, however, have good fundamentals inside and a decent mid-range shot. If LSU can get him the ball in good position he usually finishes.

Mays was up and down last night. It appears he tried to force things a bit, leading to turnovers. But his play on the final possession was outstanding. He (along with Rachal) was able to pin the Michigan player against the sideline the entire length of the court and force a contested shot without fouling. It won't show up in the box score, but it was a terrific play!

I like CWW called time out with 8 sec left in the first half to plot play for the last shot and it went in. What a real X-and-O coach we have.

When the going gets tough, a team will look to its leader for what to do. When this team looks at coach Wade, they don't see any quit. Since he won't quit, they won't quit.

I love this guy so much.

If Waters plays well enough to be all conference his freshman year I doubt he will be here four years. He reminds me a lot of Tyler Ulis who ended up being the SEC Player and Defensive Player of the Year as a sophomore and left after his sophomore year. Just because a kid is short doesn't mean he is automatically a 4 year guy. If he averages around 18 points and 9-10 assists his 2nd year (which is very realistic for him) and LSU does well (which I think they will) I think he is gone. So is Naz Reid. But having a sophomore Javonte Smart and Darius Days and Senior Skylar Mays shouldn't be bad at all.

Although he didn't affect the game on the offensive side that much, Sampson played locked down defense on one of Michigan's best players. The commentators mentioned in the middle of the second half that Sampson had only allowed that guy only one basket when he was in the game and guarding him. He was frustrating that kid all night long.

Hopefully have enough gas in the tank to defend ND on the perimeter. Sampson should be well rested but looked like he landed awkwardly and was a little gimpy. If Reath can stay on the floor it'll be huge.

Rachal really showed his potential last night . That kid , if he works at his craft, can end up being a lot better than I thought. In general last night blew my mind . They did everything as a team - i haven’t seen that kind of team chemistry in a long time . It was uplifting to watch.

Great write up. Reath had some timely buckets in the post. He may not be the most gifted player, but I love his hustle. He will get better on the boards.

I love this teams grit and determination. Next year is going to be an unbelievable year. These guys are laying the foundation! Geaux!!!!!

Reath played well early last night. I like how wade used him. UM was guarding the perimeter well so he got some nice looks early. Even draining a 3. UM is a solid defensive team but we hung in there and got up after getting punched in the mouth to comeback and win!

Body language was noticeable last night. Wade has made a big deal about the guys on the bench being in the game, etc.

I saw all of these things last night:

--players rushing over to help a teammate who was on the floor

--players huddling together during stoppages of play, like for FT

--players on the bench looking genuinely happy for those playing on the floor and when they came out of the game

--players all over the floor diving for loose balls

--players not panicking at the first sign of trouble. Down by 9 with 5 minutes left? Waters told someone to hold his beer so he could go to work.

What is most awesome of this is that the players got some gratification for the hard work they have put in. While a lot of us would have been content with a "moral victory" at about the 5 minute mark, the players went and got a real victory instead.

The players are buying what Wade is selling, and they got rewarded for it last night.

I love the way the players are sticking to their strengths. Rachal isn't a good shooter, so he attacks the rim. Also, Reath's outside shot attempts have gone way down.

Really nice post.

Your comments on each player are on target. IMO the biggest surprise of this LSU team is Rachal. I love his play and I see so much potential there.

The biggest thing that stands out with this Will Wade coached team is defense. These kids are giving maximum effort. I love it. I also like the fact that this LSU team so far shows that there are a variety of scorers on this team (despite Waters taking over in the end). I think that is a testament to Coach WW.

There was one particular thing that really stuck out to me from a coaching perspective last night. It was a stretch of three offensive possessions where the offense seemed to be out of sorts and could not execute against Michigan's defense. Coach WW call time out and addressed the situation (I would love to hear that conversation between WW and his players in the huddle). Adjustments were made on the offensive end and the run ensued.

I think Rachal is going to be my favorite player on this team. Reminds me a lot of Iguodala and Gerald Wallace in the way he cherishes doing the dirty work.

Waters has absolute ice in his veins and I agree that he seems like a 4-yr player for us.

I've been really impressed by Sampson's development this year. He has so much potential with his shooting stroke and athleticism to make defenders pay for closing out too hard. He's made some really good strides defensively this year so far and is starting to put everything together. I can definitely see him playing at the next level.

And it's such a relief seeing Epps come around. When he first signed on at LSU I thought he was going to be a great program guy who really hits his stride in his Jr and Sr years similar to Taurean Prince at Baylor. I was discouraged because I learned quickly that he wasn't going to get that development under JJ, but Wade has turned him into a promising contributor in such a short amount of time.

After suffering through two years of season tickets watching Johnny Jones, I'm so excited to see the investment pay off this year in the PMAC.

You're way too hard on Sampson. He is doing everything that CWW wants him to. He is playing great defense, rebounding, taking good shots and doing all the little things that don't always show on the box score.

Look out for Epps! The guy looks like he wants to make up for three basically wasted years in one year. The look on his face was scary. Complete concentration and competition written all over him.

Too easy to write forever about Waters, so I will just say thank you for coming to Baton Rouge.

Reath and Mays still have some work to do. Both made way too many turnovers and Mays tried to force too much while Reath just misses too many easy inside shots and is not physical enough on defense and rebounding.

Rachel looks and plays much bigger than he really is. He is the nitty gritty blue collar guy we really need. Sims and Edwards give us the depth and are both capable of big scoring games if left alone.

Keep in mind that all of this is coming after only the third game of the season, which was probably the best win of the last seven years. So no idea really if this can be sustained two days in a row or for a season. The team was noticeablly tired in the second half which was understandable considering the incredible effort they gave.

I'm watching the game right now and love how Coach Wade is always chirping (strategy to the team and awareness to the refs). It's absolutely great to see.
