I rewatched the defense from the auburn game and trust me if we keep Bo another year it’ll maybe get slightly better once we bring in some recruits that fit his system more but ultimately it’ll be a lot of the same. The game plans and lack of adjustments in games are just bad. He will be regularly out coached especially with all the good offensive coaches in this league. This was unfortunately another bad hire by Ed. I’d cut bait at the end of season and go hire a better 4-3 DC. If not, Ed could easily be on the hot seat next year and then facing a must win season in 2022 to keep his job.

Can't fire him now. No money to do so. Layoffs and pay cuts.

Ed may give him a 2nd year.
I’m fine with that. then if things don’t improve, Ed can go with Pelini.

Fire him now and you’re in limbo land with no DC until next year which may or may not be worse than where you currently are. Plus the next DC is watching and wondering how much rope he’ll get. Orgeron also has a locker room that isn’t connecting with him so he doesn’t know which problem to solve first.

Just to answer the issue about firing Pelini...

Total Yards Allowed (By Week)
1: 632 (MSU's only Win, most points, and best performance by far this year)
2: 266 (Vandy's 2nd best offensive game of 2020)
3: 586 (Mizzou's best offensive game by 165 yards, and most points)
4: 403 (USCe 2nd best performance of year)
5: 510 (AU most points and total yards of season)

They could coach themselves on the field and do better than these numbers

Personally, I’d fire Pelini now and bench a couple of starters
Outside of Damone who do you bench? Harris or Hampton? we have no depth

LSU cannot fire anyone who they have to pay a big buyout to. There is no money.

The argument of the next DC you hire being worried about how much rope they get makes no sense. A. If you have a historically bad defense and don’t at least trend upward as the year goes on then yes you get kicked to the curb B. Any elite DC will not be worried about being fired after one year because the product they put on the field will be much better than what we have seen

This very argument is why so many people were ok with the Pelini hire. Because we have so much talent, how bad could it be? Turns out really bad and elite coaches will take note of the situation.

There are serious recruiting implications as well. If you give the slightest hint of instability in the coaching ranks, you could have a lot of decommits that you’ll have to mitigate and do serious damage control.

Yet in other threads, people are arguing that O’s weak recruiting class in 2018 is a big issue this year

Send him to the press box for now. He's gone 1/1/21 along with this damn year.

As much as it’s the move that needs to happen O can’t have it happen. Not yet. He’s used up his big get out of jail free card with Matt Canada. This will take some finesse. Bo will have to agree to take a smaller buyout and he gas all the leverage right now. Our best hope would be Bo’s defenses play better these last few games and TE gets an offer to coordinate a defense somewhere in the Midwest at a smaller group of 5 or FCS school. He would still get a portion of the big LSU money but he will also he free of the disaster that has been this year and never have to see Baton Rouge again. You can bet he never wishes he was still head coach at Youngstown making way less money but getting those Nebraska payments too. His dreams of a power 5 head coach are dead forever how though and he’s got to know that.

LSU will come up with 7M. Private donors plus the opportunity cost of not firing him.

I would still rather see donors raise money to pay the salary of the people who LSU's athletic department had to lay off, but I know how the world works and this would never happen.

The football program just lost $80,000,000 due to COVID.

I think that was the number if a season wasn't played at all. Having limited fans at the game didn't cost the football program, by itself, $80MM. Regardless, if the defense continues down its current path, how do yo think support will be next year and the years that follow? Will it be more or less hurtful than the money it would cost to buy Pelini out at the end of the year ($4.5MM). With the TV contracts we have now, $4.5MM isn't as much as it used to be. It also isn't a number that would be owed to Pelini immediately. Those buyouts are almost always paid out over time. For instance, when we fired Canada, we paid him 1 million up front and the remaining $700k over 20 months. And when it comes down to it, this decision would be up to the boosters. If they want to pony up the buyout money, they will.

isee what you are saying. it's clear as day to all in ncaa sports (including agents for coaches) that LSU defense under pelini is ATROCIOUS.

i dont think this is a scneario where it looks like pelini wasnt given a fair chance.

Ummm no we don’t. You know how many young DC want to step up and be the DC on a team that won a NC? They know it’s an easy stepping stone to a HC job or NFL coordinator job.

I couldn’t believe we payed Pelini the amount we did. Basically what Aranda was making. I thought he would get around 1-1.2 a year. And we doubled that. It’s insane.

I can’t see Woodward giving O a chance to screw up another hire. This is the beginning of the end once a head coach has his freedom to hire anyone he wants taken away he is a lame duck coach.
