re: No State Taxes on NIL

Max LA state income tax is 6 % and 9 states have no state tax at all. If you want to be competitive with Texas, Florida, Tennessee and others, this is a good move.

So hear me out …..players not having to pay state income tax allows us to compete with other states for these players. This seems to be understood by all.
Soooooo, What if we did away with all state income taxes across all careers and tried to actually keep up with other states in real life and not just football? Why aren’t we competing for the best people/businesses in all professions?

No, NFL players have strict tax liabilities. NFL players get weekly game checks during the season. I.E. the huge annual salary is paid in 16 installments (I guess 17 now but whatever). HOWEVER, half of those checks are for away games - that away week's check is earned in another state (usually) and subject to that state's income taxes. For you and me it's irrelevant but for the guy earning $15 million in one day that's a HUGE tax payout. When the Cowboys come play the Saints 1/16th of the entire Cowboys' payroll is subject to LA state/local taxes and they're strict about getting it. Every team had a direct link to NFL HQ in NY to calculate taxes owed from the master database of player contracts.

it hurts/affects any tax payer in the state of Louisiana. There are a lot of those on this site

I own a company. From now on I will not pay myself a salary and bonuses. Any money received will be for NIL for my company.

I am fully aware of how it works. Almost all states have a "jock tax" and I wish they could do it to college athletes. Bending tax rules just to have a popular college football team is absurd and I except undefeated seasons if these athletes are going to be coddled the way they are now.

yeah, we should just let Alabama and Georgia and Texas do it.

F that. No special circumstances or privileges. I work, and pay more than my fair share of taxes so others do not have to (because of the flawed system already). We don't need to introduce even more flaws into the system just because we are trying to stay competitive in a college sports landscape.
Well the money is going to be taxed on the back end anyway so the state is getting theirs regardless.
ETA: I may have misread it. I thought it read NIL donations are tax deductible. But rereading it says the athlete won’t pay taxes?!? frick that.

I don't like it.....but if any kid goes to a state that doesn't collect state tax, our NIL funds would simply have to raise that much more just to be on par.
Interesting concept which works the same fricking way for my state income tax money. Maybe they could look into eliminating it all together to prevent losing working class talent to neighboring states.

Agreed! Either ALL income is taxed or NONE is, plain and simple.
Posted on 2/25/25 at 10:39 pm to WacoTiger
Those that don’t object either don’t pay state income taxes or they are completely cucked by LSU.

You don’t provide value to one of the state’s biggest marketing apparatuses, which is what championship-level sports are at a flagship like LSU

If LSU football is the straw that breaks this dumb state's income tax back that'd be the most Louisiana thing ever
This state knows it's a laughing stock in regards to everything not associated with LSU athletics and with dumb sh#t like this gaining national attention they embrace that notion as well. Embarrassing on all fronts

I see you don’t live in Louisiana, so not like it’s coming out of your pocket.

You don’t understand that shortfall will be made up by the working people in this state.

Good way to piss a TON of your average life blood fans off. Absolutely stupid beyond belief.

The amount of tax revenue from NIL is negligible for the state. Further, if you don’t make it exempt, then you’ll have to pay more by grossing up to account for taxes- if you want to be competitive. It is what it is.

This is about competing with other states ( see Texas and Florida) that don’t have state taxes. I am all for this to help us get the best players.

I've been a Tax Attorney (with a Masters of Law in Taxation) for over 40 years. I understand taxes better than you (and probably 99% of the people on this Board).
This examption has no harm on you or the working people of this state. Before 3 years ago, there was no tax revenue being paid to the State on NIL. The maximum amount of the tax revenue to the State of Louisiana on $10M of NIL is $425,000. This income tax revenue was lagniappe to La.
Based on your comment, why wouldn't you want the State of Louisiana to contribute $425,000 to NIL?
These players will probably spend their money in Louisiana and will pay sales tax, gasoline taxes, etc., so that revenue will not be lost
If one player is analyzing their $1M NIL deal between La and Texas (which doesn't have an income tax), that player's net NIL is $42,5000 more in Tx because of the La Income Tax. This helps level the playing field with those States with no income tax or that have already passed a law exempting NIL from State income taxes. It is very simple and a great step for LSU. Every dollar matters in NIL recruiting

Louisiana will continue to be a shithole state
Caring more about college football than anything else
Texas and Florida don’t have state taxes for anyone, it’s not like they’re catering to an athlete
Louisiana is trying to do the opposite

Louisiana does this in just about every competitive field. But you better believe that they will find a new tax, fee, fine or grift that affects Mr. Average John Q. Taxpayer. One of the biggest things I do not miss about the State.
