quote:a huge part absolutely. His footwork in the pocket was amazing not to mention his ability to run. Clyde doing that amazing spin move to avoid defenders in the backfield helped as well. They were good but not the best in the country
All Burrow I guess

Great that they won the award in 2019.
But put it in perspective. See that guy on the left kneeling? He got fired.

So the most complicated position group to play is behind the least complicated in the first scrimmage ?
Check

They didn’t block that well in 2019. Burrow made them look competent.

but a veteran OL should not be struggling this much with the amount of playing time they have had together.
Or, just stick with me........they just aren't that good (Ingram aside)
Wire, Hines, Shanahan and Deculus are not sniffing the field at their current skill level (as starters) if they play for TAMU, UGA or Bama
But according to Ranter's. It was all Brennan's fault last year.

Outside of QB, Oline is the biggest weakness on this team
With very few exceptions, this has been true forever. Even if we get a single great OT or a pair of guards or a guard and center combo that work great together, we're rarely more than 1 injury away from all kinds of problems on the OL even in rare years where we have 3 or 4 solid starters.
And, before Joe Burrow, how many QBs did we have that were game changers? Both Matts were game managers, not game changers. Jamarcus had all world ability, but suffered from consistency issues at times. Rohan was also hot and cold at times. In Hindsight, Mett seems to have benefitted from having all pro receivers at the collegiate level.
Before that, Hodson was a legitimately great QB game-to-game, but seemed to wilt a little in big games. Even the Ruston Rifle had to split time because of the times.
LSU always had QB questions and always will, I suppose.
Except that one time...

quote:quote:you also had Ingram (future NFL pick) and 3 NFL draft picks on that line
Well, they blocked well enough that year lol
Cushenberry, Lewis, and Charles weren’t just NFL draft picks - they were NFL starters as rookies. Charles got hurt, but he did start a game between his return (from a training camp injury) and re-injury that put him out for the year.
So the 2019 OL included three players who would become NFL starters in 2020. Yet all three also started in 2018. Our 2018 OL play was abysmal. Yes, a lot of it was the overall offensive scheme with constant 6-7 man protections. And yes, a lot of their success in 2019 was due to the new scheme and Burrow’s abilities.
Regardless, the fact that 3 of the ‘18/‘19 starters went on to become NFL starters in 2020 dispels the notion that our main problem in 2018 was lack of offensive line talent. I suspect it was a combination of:
1. Experience and development, in which case the 2021 OL should play better than they did in 2020.
2. Scheme, in which case the 2021 OL could play better than 2020 if the playcalling and overall scheme is better.
3. Cregg’s coaching (in conjunction with the other 2 points), in which case the 2021 OL could play better than 2020 if Davis brings a better methodology to the table.
I just don’t think it’s fair to write these guys off based on last year. I don’t think it’s all that likely that we have 3 NFL starters on the OL right now, but I sure didn’t think it was likely in August 2019 either.

New OC, new line coach, 1st scrimmage. That is all.

How are they playing in the NFL? Is their QB still making them look good?

He certainly made them look good enough to get them there. Burrow was sacked way more times and spent way more time scrambling and making things happen during broken coverage, than any championship quarterback should have. His abilities masked a lot of issues that were repeatedly happening on the line. Regardless of the outcome, the offensive line contribution was less than perfect at best, and down right bad in some instances.

Doesn't help that we struggle the last 2 years getting OL recruits also
Posted on 8/16/21 at 2:17 pm to CP3LSU25
And now we are hearing our 5 and 6th year experienced OL are having “communication” issues ….

but they really didn't
They blocked better
They benefited from
1. Joe being a magician under pressure
2. CEH breaking a ton of tackles
3. A quick read offense
4. Playcalling that kept the defense off balance
We can at least give them 3-4 this year.

. I didn't understand why so many were excited about an OL returning that didn't play very well at all. I understand that experience is important, but so is talent and chemistry
Young players tend to get better with time and experience. You really can't compare these guys to who they were last year or the year before. And by young, I mean all college players develop over time.

I was hoping a new OL coach would help -

I'm ready to see some new faces give it a try and see if they can do any better. Something has to change!
Are you saying you'd rather play players who aren't as good as the starters(based on actual football coaches opinions) on the slim chance that they work out?
Posted on 8/16/21 at 4:27 pm to CP3LSU25
If LSU really wants to be a consistent contender for the NC every year, it starts in the trenches and right now we don't have the talent on the OL to compete consistently. Alabama has studs at every position and when one goes to the NFL, the next beast steps in. Alabama puts first round OL into the league every year, and we put late 3rd and 4th rounders in. I hate it, but that's the reality of the situation!

Can we let them play a game before we define them?

Wrong

if the pass and run game are there and Johnson is agile enough on his feet then the O-Line just has to be good enough to allow the play makers to free up.

They're not very talented and have been poorly coached. Why are you surprised?
