Those numbers are great, but its a disservice to say "no one has ever put up numbers like this", when some of the numbers Ben Simmons put up over the course of an entire season will never be touched, not just at LSU & SEC, but nationally.
You know who else has never put up these numbers Tremont has over the course of a season? Him. Why are we comparing the full seasons of other players to 8 games from Waters? I love Cody Worsham...The best LSU writer out there right now, but c'mon!!

which is considerably superior to TW.
It's not really comparible since Jackson's numbers were more in line with a shooting guard, whereas Waters is a true point guard.

Just wanted to say this has been an awesome thread to read. Ton of good posts in here, very
un-Rantesque. Have thoroughly enjoyed reading everyone’s views and agree with all except the Thornton comment; he was a great player as well.
I will say that Waters is the reason I have started watching LSU basketball again. He’s just so dynamic yet very casual and unassuming. He has amazing awareness. Probably my favorite player since Tyrus Thomas. We are extremely fortunate to have him.

The turnover stat was amazing! I did not realize he had zero last night. MUCH improved!! Now, we just need to work on our team defense, make corrections, and keep improving every game. This is an incredibly athletic team!

However, if you want to ruffle a few feathers, compare those numbers to Ben Simmons
19 ppg, 4.8 APG, 11.8 RPG, 2.0 SPG, 56% FG%.
No doubt a great ball handler/distributor, but more of a point fwd and Gray at point guard.

Fess Irvin makes all these guys look like pikers!!!

It’s not even close. Maravich without a doubt.

Kenny Higgs had to be close.

Don’t think anyone disagrees with ‘what’s his name’s’ talent, just that he never became a Tiger. Hard to root for a guy who came to LSU and could care less.

I can only imagine pete today with the 3 pt line and surrounding talent. To me he was the greatest

wife watched the tail end of the game with me.... at one point was like, "Jesus, he does know there are other players on his team right...is he gonna pass ever" Just sat back and said...nah...he's got this as he crossed over defenders and drove it to the hoop

BOTH were great players. But one is vilified by LSU fans and the other is revered
I'll give you 1 guess at why that is the case.

And Waters is like under 6' .
That's not to take anything away from Waters, but come on, man...most would never argue that Pete wasn't the best PG in LSU history. But to say Chris Jackson, Ben Simmons, or even Waters aren't in the conversation is stupid.
Waters isn't in the conversation and it isn't even close.

To be fair to Waters, in the Jackson era defense was optional. Games routinely finished with both teams in the high 80’s or 90’s. CJ was scoring 30, but he was also taking ~21 shots per game. Waters is averaging half that many shots per game and averaging half as many ppg.
With 10-11 more shots per game it’s not unreasonable to think Waters could tack on an additional 10-12 ppg. That would put him at 25-27 ppg, which is not that far off from CJ

I had season tickets from 1980 to 1991. I was at the elite eight for that 81 team. I saw Derek Taylor, Ethan Martin, Chris Jackson all play. I’ve watched on TV waters in Simmons play. I was in school with Pete Maravich. All I can say is there’s never been a more creative player that I’ve ever seen on a basketball court. The greats that y’all consider today like Chris Paul and LeBron James and Derrick Rose all copied him. There are originators and there are immitators.
Pete Maravich was a transcending player.
He cut across every generation from 1970 through the players today. Funny story, my son and grandson were arguing about Michael Jordan versus LeBron James. I made them watch videos of Pete Maravich. Today they’re arguing who stole his moves more - LeBron with the full court underhand pass or Derrick Rose with the stop and let the defender fly by then lay it in. LeBron, Derrick Rose and Chris Paul all took moves from him. There is an interview I saw that Chris Paul gave once where he talked about Maravich and how he used to watch his instructional videos on ball handling. Here we are talking about Hall of Fame Pros (and college with Paul) that learned by watching him and y’all want to compare him to players who all have had significantly more talented players around them than Maravich.
It’s like comparing people who might make an all star team to people who have buildings named after them.
