So Memphis and Texas and Colorado just don't give a shite about their animals?
It looks like Memphis isn't the one responsible for the care of "TOM".

He refused to get in his cage long before any fireworks were launched.

Other animals go to games and no one cares. We got in the spotlight because people have a soft spot for tigers, and we caved. Simple as that

Yes it has nothing to do with decisions made by veterinary staff wanting to minimize stress placed on a rare, majestic animal that is next to impossible to acquire by any means. It's all because of PETA and teh SJWs. That tiger better do what i want!

And what good did they do? Mike got cancer and died.

Well, bison and cows are entirely different animals, so let's put that aside for a second.

As to Tom the Tiger, I have no idea. Maybe they don't care about their animal as much as we do. Maybe they were of the opinion that the stress of whatever routine they put him through wasn't severe. Maybe it was easier to acquire a tiger without any specific conditions re: care back in 2008 when they got him. You and I don't really know, if we're being honest. But I have a VERY hard time believing this has anything largely to do with PETA. I think it's fair to say that making it publicly known that we won't try to force him into a cage and ride him around 100,000 screaming people helps to open up our options, so I'm cool with it if it is indeed the angle they were trying. Obviously it's a childhood tradition and all, but I'm OK with sacrificing that small part of the larger tradition to ensure we keep having a tiger on campus.

The sad part is I think you are being serious with this logic.

I think it is probably a lot more complicated than that. His caretakers obviously don't feel it is in his best interest.

Isn't he not even available to see in public outside of university events? Have you ever been to a Memphis football game? They aren't similar atmospheres.

I just wish people would stop being so fake or fickle about caring for certain animals

Starve a baby cow and keep them locked in a box? No care

Take a tiger in front of loud people? Torture!!!!!

I can guarantee you that this policy was introduced and pushed by one person - King Alexander.

Last year, King was pushing hard to end the live tiger program entirely. He wanted to transform Mike's habitat into a "Bengal tiger memorial."

I don't believe this is accurate at all. Where have you heard or seen this reported?

Well cows aren't extremely endangered, rare breeds of animal, but I see what you're saying. We as a society are definitely hypocritical about animal cruelty in a number of ways.

I just don't care if going into the stadium makes Mike uncomfortable. It's what I want as a human

Now watch the people call me an a-hole, while they enjoy their veal piccata

He wanted to turn the current habitat into a memorial or "exhibit" for Bengal tigers. Nothing was ever formally proposed, but it was brought up on more than one occasion with a few of the Chancellors.

He had plenty of opportunities to not comment on getting a new Tiger, yet went out of his way, from the day Mike died, to defend LSU having a tiger on campus and state that we were getting another one.

Plenty to criticize when it comes to him, but this is BS made up crap.

In 2017, taking a live tiger into a stadium with over 100k cheering isn't happening. It will be tough enough to get a tiger as it is.

The big thing LSU is trying to do is to become an accredited tiger sanctuary. Doing so will mean LSU will be able to obtain future Mikes the same way zoos acquire tigers now. LSU has obviously gotten information on what it needs to do to become accredited. Upgrading the habitat is a great thing regardless, but if LSU continues bringing Mike into Tiger Stadium for football pregames it would not get the accreditation. And, FYI, PETA doesn't like zoos either.

From the story on The Advocate's website:
quote:

In anticipation of his arrival, starting in April, the tiger habitat will undergo renovations in hopes of having the habitat become an accredited tiger sanctuary, according to a news release from the School of Veterinary Medicine.

I think it needs to be made very clear to F.King...

NO TIGER, NO JOB FOR F.KING...

and if you want to see a bunch of politicians run for cover, let it be known that LSU won't get a new Mike!!!!

So we're renovating his habitat and announcing when he'll be on campus in an effort to not get a tiger?

really? We never had a problem with a tiger wanting to come to games until some a-hole in the athletic department thought it would be cool and increase fans enjoyment to set off pyrotechnics during the pregame ceremony, maybe even help recruiting. Maybe we should go back to the good old days and just let the band play and the tiger roar so we don't scare the hell out of our mascot and make everybody cough for 20 minutes until the smoke clears.

So you're saying if LSU gets accredited as a tiger sanctuary, we won't have to go through back door channels and have a rescue center donate an abused and neglected tiger to us, we can go get a top of the line, badass elephant eating, pure breed bengal tiger just like a zoo?

I'm in!
