Les recruited multiple OTs that are OTs in the NFL INCLUDING barksdale

Maybe Grimes our OL recruiter missed on OTs over and over again or couldn’t coach them?

The fact that Les didn’t want OTs is a rant myth.

An offensive line coach hire doesn't override the fact that O is calling the shots on the sidelines. It's scary.

We need to take up a collection for Brazos. He seems to have something stuck up his arse that he can't get out.

Come on Ree. When are you going to realize that coach/player speak doesn’t mean shite??

What would you expect a player to say about his former coach that is now at his Alma mater?

Did I say different, you dumbfrick? It is a quote from an article.

It you don't like it take it up with Joseph Barskdale.

Not hating on the hire, but if he was that good, he’d still be in the nfl

He chose to leave the NFL. He was still working in the NFL when he was hired. Completely different versus a coach gets fired and is looking for a job.
I really like this hire. IF they fix the O-line and give the QB time to throw LSU's offense will greatly improve.
Brennan is supposed to be more accurate with a stronger arm. We'll have to see how well he can pick up a defense.

From what I've read and heard about him, I am pleased with the hire. He sounds really good.

It was a factor and frankly there was not quite enough time to see how big of a factor. As far as recruiting, a big factor. Can look at Grimes' history, especially at AU, and see what was being recruited at LSU didn't match.

quote:

I think Grimes more than showed his worth this year. Saahdiq Charles was the first true freshman O-line to start the season for LSU since WWII. Charles and Ingram started the majority of the season and Deculus played also.
Saddiq is the perfect example of what was both right, and wrong, about Grimes. And it's such frigging irony... and some circular logic.

The worst play I saw SC make was in Chatt game. He was at OG. He spun out of his protection zone, without making a read. LB blitzed after this, sacked Etling. He had nowhere to go (considering his feet). I'm going to go off memory, so I may get details wrong. Here's the summary:

- Turned his back to the play, Chatt either got lucky or used it. Either way, that's a fundamental no-no.

- there was no need to spin, or pull out of his lane. DE was making headway, but RT and RB had him handled. He wasn't free. NG/DT had Clapp off balance and shoulder turned. To me it looked like a planned delay blitz and the MLB was supposed to go over center, hence the way the DT pushed Clapp. SC should have helped there AND stayed in-lane.

- The spin out was awesome; perfect balance, came out with near perfect posture, damn near square to the OT (cuz there was no foe to hit). Couldn't have done it better except for turning his back to the opponent. Clearly showed what he was capable of. It was simply excellent footwork.

Here's the moral of the story: Weeks into the season we have an OG with obvious ability to play OT making multiple fundamental mistakes AND made his center look bad, all the while it's obvious we need to shuffle OTs because both Malone and Weathersby were struggling, albeit to different degrees.

Charles potential at OT should have been recognized earlier, the fundamental mistakes should have been corrected earlier (not weeks into the season).

Once injuries and depth got to us, Charles was moved, Ingram was in (he was doing better at OG all along) and the rest was history. Weeks, depth, and injuries is what got us there. Not Grimes. However, it seems once the moves were forced Grimes felt the pressure and he did a heck of a job pushing/coaching both Ingram and Charles into form.

And I'll point out: Seemed like all of a sudden Clapp was doing better. That was a result of Ingram to his right. He had been getting stunted/shifted/slanted all year, especially Syracuse, Troy, and Chatt. The help and assignments were being blown next to him. He didn't all of a sudden get stronger as we got into SEC play. It was no coincidence that was immediately after SC's move to OT.
quote:

It's not like they were absolute world-beaters but for the youth on the line I thought they/he did an excellent job.
I thought it was good. MSU, Troy, Syr, and Chatt games were kind of pitiful but they got it together. Those teams shouldn't be pressuring/influencing our QB (and misdirecting RBs in backfield) that often.

However, while I thought it was a good to very good job, it obviously could have been better, needed to be better, and we should expect better. Do I think Cregg is the best ever? Not by a long shot. I don't even think he's as good as Studrwa. I do think he will make us better however because he's a step up from Grimes IMHO. How big a step remains to be seen.

I see myself as a call it as it is on each situation LSU fan, I believe this hire will be the biggest positive off-season move. This was a home run hire and with this class coming in paired with what we already have the O Line will be the best it's been in years. The O line is the most important group on the team because they dictate TOP, not to mention the stats this guy has as far as giving up sacks everywhere he's been, pass pro will be key next year.....This coach and the O Line are the only things I feel will be head and shoulders above what they've been the past 15 years.... I don't see how anyone could NOT be excited about the O line next year

Ummmmm, what Joe Barksdale said mixed with the amazingly low amount of sacks his lines have given up at Tennessee, USC, and Denver.....I mean, stop asking questions when the answers are there for you to find

He's done pretty well in the NFL and very well in CFB regarding sacks. It's not blind luck.

One of his strengths, and the NFL experience is very valuable in this, is teaching his OL to recognize what the defense can do from a certain alignment, teach his guys how to communicate that, and protect accordingly with 'triage' (e.g., if you have to choose between a LB coming up the middle or letting the DE around the outside on a straight drop back pass- chip the DE, stop the LB, QB steps up).

Coaching based on what the D 'can do', as opposed to what we all know as 'recognizing blitzs', limits the effectiveness of stunts, loops, and twists. In the NFL, and increasingly in CFB, what you see is NOT what you are going to get.

To be honest, Cregg's USC teams had issues with missed assignments and they were notorious for simply making bad first steps trying to get the perfect angle. One of his adjustments was that above. However, at one point Kiffin hired Mike Summers and basically demoted Cregg to his assistant. It seems Cregg learned that adjustment from Summers.

Also worth noting:

-that while he probably isn't as 'high character' as Grimes (who is about as classy as a nasty OL can get), he is very personable and players do like him.

- he does not believe in walk-throughs. Sees no point in doing it. If you think about above and diagnosing triage style, a walk-through is pointless. So he prefers to run play call repetition full speed (not full contact though). Orgeron did same with DL while they were at USC together. It was quite efficient.

Y'all can badmouth O all you want but he knows where games are won and lost...in the trench. You do a lot of finger pointing but fail to give credit where due.
He has keyed on both sides of scrimmage and that improvement is where we'll see Air Brennan flourish. In contrast to nearly all of you I am pretty excited to see our Offense under Ensminger. Kudos to addressing OL, Coach!

Best OL coach, best OC, best recruiter in the country at HC. We should win 9-10 games next year and a championship the year after huh?
