Yes, players basically talk about both guys at the same time when they sing their praises. If you got him, you should be fine.

Balis is a chicago guy and your typical strenght and condition autist type. I was relatively sure he wouldn't easily be bought off and probably rarely leaves the facility, much less the midwest. Baton Rouge would be like living in a foreign nation to him.

Aranda is a really smart guy, but not in a condescending, arrogant Charlie Weiss, Tom Herman way. He's like a sponge always trying to learn. He's basically a football nerd in the best possible way.

Him with Grimes would have been a solid hire, but there's no guarantee Grimes wouldn't have been offered the Baylor job.

Aranda simply didn't fit the mold off what Woodward wanted and I don't think he was ever a serious candidate for the job. He just doesn't have the proven track record and sustained success Woodward coveted.

Maybe I'm misremembering but I think Lake was involved in a series of recruiting violations. It was nothing too serious but I think he plays fast and loose with the rules. Not necessarily a bad thing, IMO.

Who knows? This coaching search has been exhausting and I’m too mentally worn from it to speculate. I’m just ready to move forward.

Aranda was my first choice. He has the “it” factor and I think he’d build a 20 year dynasty at LSU. But I’m excited about Kelly and face it, it’s just Scott Woodward’s style to get a “name” coach.

And Scott Woodward is probably thinking Kelly is here 5-7 years—hopefully with a natty or two—then Kelly retires. Then if Aranda has proven himself at Baylor, Scott brings him back to Baton Rouge.

That type of long range planning rarely works out just that way, but I’m sure that’s a plausible scenario in Woodward’s mind.

Flying under the radar but I think a big reason kelly left ND is the transfer portal is a one way street at ND. ND only has access to grad transfers b/c it's nearly impossible to get a kid to qualify as a tranfer. Can't take JUCOs either. That makes it really hard to plug a roster hole if someone transfers or leaves early for the NFL.

I did hear your AD say that if someone is named interim HC, then he would not be a candidate for the full time HC. That seemed a bit odd to me. I think Freeman would make a really good HC because I've heard a ton of great things about his leadership. Having said that, I'd love him to come to LSU to be DC for a few years if possible.

Agreed.. i think the best possible scenario we could hope to play out with BK is he’s at LSU for 5 yrs, wins a couple of Nattys and rides off into retirement at 65 yrs old.. at which point we’ve identified a young-up-and-coming coordinator on staff to promote to HC, or hire someone nationally who isnt even on the radar right now.. Unfortunately i think by then that Aranda will have been snapped up by a big-name school, but you never know. .. Of course, there’s always the chance that BK could stay here 10 yrs til he’s Saban’s current age, and win 3 or 4 Nattys in that time.. Either way, the BK hire is growing on me and i think it’s a smart hire, if not very sexy.

Both Freeman and Rees are set to meet with Swarbrick, ND's AD, today so we should have some answers here soon.

It's confirmed you have a huge offer for him.

Few rumors going around - Poster on OSU board said he will be named D coordinator by Friday. Duke wants him for the head job. Freeman wants to be at ND long term.

I could see him at OSU over LSU if they match the money. He's got five kids and I doubt he wants to vagabond around the country. Columbus and/or Ohio in general is his home and he can look at this as a long vacation in south bend (woof).

I can't see him going to Duke. That place could kill his career trajectory and the only real upside is it's a nice place to live and he has low expectations with quite a bit of job secruity. I doubt that matters to a guy like Freeman. He's probably better off at OSU or LSU waiting for something better than Duke.

I heard Quinn will not be retained by ND and will not be on LSU staff either. Loy (247 guy for ND) on Quinn: “If he wants to coach offensive line, I don’t think he’s going to end up at Notre Dame or LSU next year”. Could be good news for you.

I think this is the most likely result, if he’s a DC next year.

What do you know about Hiestand? Looks like he’s been out of coaching for a couple seasons now. Could he want to come back?

Heistand was an incredible coach. Just look at the guys he pumped out of ND. Allegedly, he was forced out of ND b/c he was "too hard" on his players. Basically, he rode the living shite out of a highly ranked kid who ended up transferring. He came from a relatively wealthy family who just pushed the issue and I'm guessing they believed Harry was verbally abusing their good boy b/c Harry was mean and it had nothing to do with trying to make him tougher. It was well known within the program that Hiestand was incredibly tough on his linemen and those that made it, made it big and those that didn't hated him.

Anyone who has played ball, especially in college, knows that this is eactly the kind of guy you want molding and building your offensive linemen By nature, young big guys are soft and lazy and they just want to graze the practice fields while they discuss what they're having for dinner. That wasn't an option with Hiestand and he broke some guys.

Heistand took the Bears job and Kelly got Quinn to replace him. Quinn was a more active recruiter. Heistand hated recruiting and basically relied on his ability to make you a NFL linemen to snag recruits. The difference on the field is noticeable. ND still has a good offensive line but nothing like we had with Heistand. Those guys were just incredibly tough and worked well as a unit. Nobody had better technique. I don't follow the NFL much but Zach Martin and Quetin Nelson are probably still regarded as the best guards and Ronnie Stanley is probably one of the better tackles, I assume. Those are Heistand guys and will credit him for their careers. Zach Martin is the most convincing one - he was an undersized three star when he came to ND and still played LT. Nobody got around him. He was literally damn near perfect. I think he won a fricking MVP award at some shite bowl game we played a few years back.

Heistand has got to be kinda old now but would be a home run hire if you guys got him, imo.

I do not like his style of running on offense. Slow developing and too much lateral movement. Even with a great offensive line, it makes it difficult to run against high quality defenses with speed.

Could this be a function of the speed of the players as opposed to the the offensive play design? If its the former then there will be no problem at LSU.

Not in this ND fan's opinion. Kyren Williams and Chris Tyree are every bit as good as any backfield in the SEC right now. It was a problem in the mid-2010's when we had four future top 10 picks playing on the same offensive line. Just seems to be a feature and not a bug of Kelly's offense.

Too bad Wimbush didn’t work out. He was predicted to be one of the all time great ND QBs.

He's not a good oline coach. 247 guy for ND said he's not going to LSU or staying at ND if he wants to coach the oline. He was an analyst or some shite at ND before he was named the oline coach and that's the only job I would give him at LSU or ND.

Wimbush's first year as a starter was somewhat unexpected b/c Kizer left ND early. Huge mistake on his part. He could have used another year at ND, and that team was loaded with talent on the offense, especially the offensive line - LT and LG were top ten picks and the other three guys are in NFL.

I doubt Wimbush would have ever worked out b/c he just couldn't run the offense that well. Book took over midway through the season and it was a decent year overall but could have been Kelly's best team at ND if Kizer came back. I think that was the year they beat your boys in the citrus bowl.
