NCAA single season strikeout record

With Skenes breaking Big Ben's SEC strikeout record, I was curious to see who had the NCAA record. Derek Tatsuno of Hawaii struckout 234 batters in 1979. He pitched 174 1/3 innings. Skenes struckout 209 in 122 2/3 innings. Skenes has a higher strikeouts per inning ratio than Tatsuno (1.70 to 1.34). By comparison, Ben struckout 202 batters in 152 1/3 innings (1.33 per inning). We have just witnessed the best single season performance in college baseball history.

I’d like to see the list. Is anyone between Tatsuno and Skeen’s?
I know there is someone who pitched far fewer innings but has as a better strikeout per nine innings ratio. Again I wish I could see a top ten or twenty list to help put things into perspective.

I'll keep digging. The only thing I could find was an NCAA record book. It only lists the top spot.

Awesome!! Where did you find this?
Edit: Nevermind. I found it in the same record book.

Jared weaver is the guy you want to get past . Everything else is viewed through a different lens . It’s about the era

I did find that Trevor Bauer of UCLA struck out 203 in 136.2 innings in 2011. However, he is not listed in the official NCAA record book. He and Gerrit Cole were on the same staff. Definitely remember them kicking our azz.

Floyd Bannister was a Bad Dude!

Remember him well. Had a decent career. Being on a bunch of crappy teams didn't help.

No thanks to South Carolina

That he was. Skenes still has him beat in strikeouts per inning.

Something has to be done to get Skenes a start in the finals.
It’s absolutely criminal that the best pitcher in the country might not get to pitch in the biggest series of the season.

I just don't see how that would happen. He would get an inning or 2 max on Monday. That's assuming that it goes to a game 3.

The finals always used to start on Monday… I’d protest to have them pushed back.
But it feels like a Monday winner-take-all would be one of those times Skenes might physically pick up CJJ and tell him he’s finishing this thing.

Meaning the Tiger teams of the 80s and 90s were inferior to todays players?

I think its more of those guys just threw their arms off back then. If we threw skenes in every single game that he COULD have pitched in he'd have 350 K's by now

No doubt. Pitchers back in the day would often go 7-8 innings minimum. The concept of middle relief or pitch count was nonexistent. Nolan Ryan once went 13 innings in 1974. He threw 235 pitches and struck out 19. You will never see that again. Hell, Sandy Koufax pitched 3 complete World Series games in just 8 days in 1965 (games 2,5 and 7). He threw a complete game shutout in game 7 on just 2 days rest. Insane.

The Fact that Skenes did this against much better competition that anyone on that list has ever seen is what is truly remarkable and might not be seen again.
Lucky to have to have watched him in every game.
It was a treat that never got old.

What needs to be said was that they played longer seasons back then… the limit of 56 games in the regular season is fairly new, as well as the season starting the third week of February. It used to start in January for some warm-weather teams
