This is ESPN's legacy to college football--make billions for the network and don't give a damn that it wrecks the sport.

We write our own rules and we govern ourselves?? Sweet!! Yep. What could possibly go wrong?

all I am sure of is what COULD go wrong WILL go wrong.

just depends on how far the 5 conferences go. money will still be limited so they aren't gonna make the players rich. remember, you ain't gonna get away with paying football players and not treating women volleyball players the same.

As it should be. They should become a separate division and only play each other IMO.

Does this kill JUCO?

I see the non select schools being the new JUCO and the select schools being pure 3 and out.

How the hell can schools governed by one set of rules keep playing schools governed by different rules? The two groups need to stop playing each other IMO

Legal but maybe not moral. There will be bad unintended consequences. Schools will find new ways to game the system.

Market principles. Supply and demand. People want to see them play. It's a huge industry. Like any other entertainment industry, they are the talent and they should get paid for it.

this will ruin the chances for small conference teams.

Any additional payments LSU makes under new guidelines will come from the fans' pocket books. Do you honestly think that all this great revenue from the SECN will benefit Joe Fan's pocketbook? As for your "$500" a wk, mulitple that amount times the number of athletes on scholarship to get a true figure of costs. And it will have to go to every scholarship athlete or Title IX'ers will be screaming & suing. Clue: your season tickets, parking pass, concessions & parking fees all just went up. Relaxing on recruiting/agent relationships adjusted: it will cost more to get that 5 star now.

First, like any business, the business will charge what the market will bear. That happens now. That will continue to happen in the future. Second, do you honestly think that the revenue increases will stop with the SECN?

What? Athletes aren't going to recieve $500/week. And you completely missed the point. My question was why did the poster think he deserved to get paid but not the college athletes.

The market will bear what the market will bear. Pretty simple. It will be a business decision, just like it is now, to determine how much to spend on recruiting or paying coaches. There is nothing right now to stop increases in LSU's recruiting or coaching budgets.

Is it supposed to?

This isn't the NFL this is college football. They are amateurs. There payment to play for whatever university they are at is a free education. Something that takes years for people to pay for after they are finished with school. Why are we trying to make college football and basketball just farm systems for the NFL and NBA?

If they do it so well they can wait to play in the NFL NBA or MLB until then they are still amateurs

Re your references to what the "market will bear", are you not aware of one of the biggest complaints now is what it costs to attend a game? Especially with regards to the quality of those games. LSU is selling tickets but game attendance is dropping, at times dramatically & all it will take is one 4 loss season...and ask Fla how easily that can happen...and the bottom will drop out of your market. The increasing number of empty seats speaks for itself. As for the $500 a wk comment, I was simply using the example of a poster who used that amount as a "what if". As for my pocketbook, I am already questiong the value of what I pay to LSU, and have since 1961, to what I am getting in return. And I am not alone by any means. My point was simply that these new "rules" are going to end up costing the LSU fan, significantly.

Why? Because the NCAA was a monopoly. They won't be amateurs for long.

Why should they be limited to a free education if the market is willing to pay them more? Free enterprise and market demand should determine what they get paid. They are about to get better compensation.

They are amateurs solely because of NCAA monopolistic control. They won't be amateurs for long. Why do you begrudge them the compensation that the market is willing to pay them?

LSU just added on the Tiger Stadium. Why did they do that? Is it because "game attendance is dropping, at times dramatically"?

Hypthetically, if ticket prices did not go up, would you care if college athletes were highly compensated?

They have to be very careful with the paying players part. If schools are allowed to get into bidding wars over recruits, some football programs will be permanently hamstrung. Every player should get the same amount of money, whether it be a "signing bonus" or just a stipend.

Example: 5 star stud signs, gets the most money on the team, but he is a bust. 3 star doesn't get a whole lot, but ends up being a sleeper and the star on the team. Think there would be some animosity there? Definitely don't need that on a team.
