A lot the credit for our natty goes to the guys in the lineup, as it should. But our bullpen stepped up in a HUGE way during postseason play and I think Wes deserves a lot of credit for that.

Reds took 2 college pitchers in the first round, they went a combined 22-0.

Our staff last year still had a major problem with walks.

Not saying that we didn't, but it was pretty well known and discussed that the strike zone in SEC play was very tight and inconsistent last year. A lot of people predicted the staff last year would do much better once tournament play started because of this and that's exactly what happened.

All that to say that I will take a wait and see approach when it comes to Yeskie. Wes and Jay did a lot with less talent.

I mean the majority of our pitchers improved throughout the year and were the best versions of themselves at the end in the postseason. That’s exactly what you want.

Those baws were playing outside their minds in Omaha, I thought it was over when we were facing Drew Beam with Ack and gotdamn, what a game.

Bullpen started out the season , and well into sec play, as a complete disaster.

Then the bull pen turned into a massive strength late in the season , really pitching incredibly in the ncaa tournament.

And you start a thread to shite on the pitching coach.

Not too late to delete your original message dumbass.

Not really until later in the year. One trick fastball pony

Yeah MLB drafted Floyd in the 1st (or competitive balance round A) because he only had 1 competitive pitch

You didnt watch last season, its ok to admit that

Dude there is no comparison from last year to this year. We didn’t have close to the depth we do this year. Of course it’s going to look completely different this year. Had we not lost 3 of our best pitchers last year, we would have been #1 all season and you definitely woufmt be saying this nonsense. Just about everyone of our pitchers improved on velo and added another pitch. The change-up was a big deal for Wes-Johnson and he helped all of our pitchers out, including Skenes.

Say what you want but it was because of Wes that Skenes threw 100 mph. He was throwing 93-95 max before. Wes put him on a strictly pitching regiment and his velo picked up 5mph. The same with many of our pitchers. Yeskie and Wes are very different coaches but get very similar results. Wes is all about the science of the game. Yeskie is all about preparing for the battle on game day but is also adds some science into his style as well.

Both are two of the best in the game and we should just be happy that we had both. I’m not sure if one is better than the other but what Wes did last year is quite amazing. Especially after losing the depth we had.

Jay took over a lot of duties. Some people noticed that Jay started making the mound visits around the Georgia series. We came to find out that Wes was interviewing for jobs around that time. Right before Hurd made his turnaround Jay made comments that he was going to totally change Hurd’s mental approach and it worked, something clicked.

I think Wes is a good coach, but all indications point to Jay pressing the right buttons at the end of the season.

You'll get downvoted, but you are right. I'm not saying Wes isn't a good coach, but the pitching staff seemed to do better as Jay seemed to be more involved. It could have been a mental thing. I don't recall exactly what was said, but I remember watching an interview where Jay was asked about losing Wes. His answer seemed more to revolve around losing a great friend than it was about the coach. Maybe it was nothing, but it was just something that stuck out when I saw it.

7-0 with a 4.35 ERA is not great. The win-loss record is fine, but Floyd got bailed out of several poor starts by our great offense. In SEC play he had 5 games where he couldn’t finish five innings. He had the following stat line in those games:

3.1 innings, 5 runs
3.0 innings, 4 runs
4.2 innings, 6 runs
2.2 innings, 6 runs
3.2 innings, 3 runs

Add in a super regional start with the line of
3.1 innings, 3 runs

And in his best performance of his career, he struck out 17 Florida hitters but still gave up 3 runs and 5 hits in 8 innings of work. Compare that to Brett Laxton’s 16 strikeout, 3 hit complete game shut out in the national championship game.

Ty Floyd had great stuff, but there is more to pitching and getting outs than just having great stuff.

I don’t know if Yeskie will be better than Wes or not

Hell I’m not even sure how good of a coach Wes was. He’s very highly respected as one of the best pitching coaches in the country regardless of the level.

I also know that he had a ton of arm injuries at State, Arkansas and to a lesser degree with us.

It also seemed like the pitching approach got better once Jay started making the mound visits which made it seem Jay had removed some of Wes’s responsibilities. Did he truly though? No one knows.

It’s hard to make a judgment on Wes one way or another.
