If you ask me, Johnson rode the coattails of Skenes and really didn’t impact our rotation in a positive way as much as he should have. Our staff last year still had a major problem with walks. I am ecstatic for a Hurd, Holman, Jump rotation. IMO we will be better off this year with 3 solid starters unlike last year with one ace, one reliable arm (Floyd), and a question mark on Sundays.

Disagree.

I was told by a player that played LSU last year that to him Floyd was actually harder to face than Skenes. With Skenes everything was 90+, he said Floyd had the ability to mix up speeds along with a Mid 90s Fastball.

He was throwing breaking balls under Kelly and was very effective when he threw them for strikes.

He threw a curveball against Texas in Minute Maid that made the batter re-think his life.

ETA: That batter ended transferring to Kentucky this offseason. Floyd screwed him up so bad he CHOSE to play for Nick Mingeone.

I saw huge improvement from a lot of our pitchers. Ty Floyd, Herring, and Ack, along with Thatcher Hurd finally rounding into form. Also, our coaches took a second team all-SEC pitcher and turned him into the number 1 draft choice.

I think most wanted Hurd gone or at least out of the rotation(myself included). What a turn around for him, dude went beast mode and kept working.

Dont know if that was coaching or him or a combo of both, but he came through in the end.

I’m sure yeskie will be great but what that staff became past year was incredible. Wes had a lot to do with that. He’s one of the best in baseball

At years end Johnson had the staff maximized. He did a great job. Arms were live. Every member including Skenes improved.

No, he read it on tigerdroppings. They get something in their head and stick to it. The proof of it changing can play out in front of their eyes for an entire season, but it doesn't matter.

Not going there. Wes Johnson is top shelf as a pitching coach. I hope he’s not as good as a HC.

Whether or not Yeskie is an upgrade over Wes is independent of the fact that we have a deeper starting rotation this year than we did last year.

Year 3 of the Jay Johnson era and recruiting (both high school and portal) is now showing results.

Even if this were true, a dominate fastball isn’t a trick or gimmick, it’s the best pitch in baseball.

Jay took over a lot of duties. Some people noticed that Jay started making the mound visits around the Georgia series. We came to find out that Wes was interviewing for jobs around that time. Right before Hurd made his turnaround Jay made comments that he was going to totally change Hurd’s mental approach and it worked, something clicked.

I think Wes is a good coach, but all indications point to Jay pressing the right buttons at the end of the season.

Some of y’all have short memories.

ETA: I’m not ready to say Yeskie is an upgrade. Just saying Jay deserves more credit for the turnaround at the end of the season. Wes had already accepted a new position and wasn’t making mound visits.

I think this had to do with Wes having an MLB mindset with our staff last year. He allowed them a long leash in the regular season and experimented with what worked and what didn't. Then he took the data and rounded the staff into shape for the post season.

Yeah, OP is just being ridiculous. Wes Johnson is a phenomenal pitching coach that was instrumental in our national title. I hope he doesn't end up dominating as a HC in our league.

I think Yeskie looks solid on paper, but saying he's an upgrade of Wes Johnson is absurd at this point.

By a mile.

We don't have Zeus' lightning bolt in an arm like we did with Skenes, but depth is much better. If we stay healthy, we'll be a very hard team to beat in a series.

Wes Johnson was considered one of the best pitching coaches in the MLB prior to his signing and the results bore that last year. The pitching staff as a whole was terrific when it got to the postseason. I think much of the struggles during the season was seeing who had what, and then deployed that knowledge when it mattered most.

Also, I know every team has them, but look at the injuries to what would have been your arguably top 3 bullpen arms/starter in Taylor, Shores, and Edwards. I honestly that those key bullpen losses would be the death knell for the teams championship hopes, but was thrilled that I was wrong.

I think Yeskie will do a great job, but I think you are selling Johnson short to think there are many coaches that would be an upgrade over him.
