The writing has been on the wall for some time in Lafayette. The only names I have seen that I would even consider prioritizing over Napier would be Petersen (getting up there in age) or Aranda (arguably less proven).

Napier:
>Former QB who understands Xs & Os — but also understands program building
>Local ties
>Experience under (and high praise from) Dabo & Saban
>Young guy
>Relentless work ethic
>Integrity by all accounts

Let’s weigh the potential upside there vs...

>potential downsides of a Kiffen, Freeze, etc
>“do you really think Fickel or an equivalent will beat Saban (or even the machine Smart appears to be building at UGA)”
>downside of hiring someone in their 60s not named Nick Saban.

Lots of emphasis on a “splash” hire / big fish... meanwhile several fans have pined over the pipe dream of a certain member of the Carolina Panther’s organization whom they had never heard of three years ago returning from his NFL post.

Just food for thought. Is there a no-brainer available? Not in my opinion. You’re going to be forced to calculate a risk.

Convince me Napier doesn’t have the most potential upside + least potential downside of any remotely realistic name dropped to date.

I'm high on Napier and Chadwell, I'm not afraid of taking chances. I would love to have either one of those guys or Aranda as head coach.

I'm still riding with the current LSU team right now though, I can't help but pull for the unlikely because I love to see them win. I hope they turn it around and get the offense going against Kentucky and go 3-0 to finish October.

I admit that was a dumb thought. Just how thoroughly unimpressed I have been with the first wave of wish lists.

Napier is not qualified to be the head coach of LSU.

I think Scott will make Petersen an offer he can't refuse to get back into coaching at one of the premier football programs in all of college football.

You mean like Ed O took a chance on hiring Bo Pelini, and then when that blew up in his face, Ed O took another chance by hiring two coordinators with no experience?

I don't think Woodward is that kind of person personally, but hell you never know. Maybe what Ed O has is contagious.

Nonetheless, if Woodward messes up this hire, LSU could become the next Texas and not see another decent season for over ten years.

Woodward has a fine line to walk. Let's hope he makes the right decision

Woodward has made solid hires in the last year. Some may think he should act quicker than he does but I have faith in him to make a great hire.

There is little doubt that Woodward:

1. Doesn't see what's going on with the cash cow of the university

2. The off the field antics of the HC. Interpret that as you choose but I know Woodward has heard the audio of that radio and all that.

All of that stuff goes into that little folder that paints O in a negative light, by Ed's owning doing.

Woodward will get it done. Not saying he's going to get Saban here but he'll make the right hire.

That's the thing. He didn't 'take a chance.' He hired him thinking he was one of the best coordinators out there. Oddly enough, he didn't even interview the guy.

This is part of Ed's track record.

Look at the two coordinators we have this year. Neither have been a coordinator and Ed hires them after all the top ones turned him down. I wonder why.

This isn't directed at you. Just the state of the program now.

It's nuts. I don't know how much longer they can allow this to continue.

I don't think any of those guys will be considered unless LSU is turned down by other coaches first, but I like those three if LSU has to take a risk after being turned down by their primary options. I'm not speculating on who will end up being hired because I have no clue who would be interested.

Napier or Aranda would definitely be able to reverse course on the culture inside LSU football.

What Napier has done with ULL shouldn’t go unnoticed. He brought back fan support and even is getting students to show up to the games now. Hudspeth had that place a dumpster fire when he left.

Aranda’s question mark is how will he be able to recruit across the board? We know he’s a great defensive mind. The LSU brand can only get you so far.

And like someone said, these two are probably your smartest hires.

There are more ways to evaluate a head coach’s capability than the prestige of the previous job. This is the thinking I want to call out, and I think it has been LSU’s problem making football hires in general recently.

Find a metric other than... so & so had a good year at a school I know goes to big bowls sometimes. Not saying that’s not a useful starting point — but it’s not all there is.

This is your best point, and a good one.

I would not be against that type of hire. I’d want to do background checks and determine if he is the kind of manager we need, but if it all checks out I’d love that hire.

Honestly the only thing I hold against Napier is that he hasn't done it at a power 5 school.

If he was doing this at like TCU or something, I think he'd be a front runner.

Also the first guy on record saying he would be a great head coach. Then Saban hired him. Twice.

A lot of people would argue that what he has done at ULL from a program building perspective is more impressive than his Xs & Os.

Most are aware he knows the game, but this is the big piece flying under the radar.

Sun Belt is one thing.

SEC is another.

He ain’t ready and Woody will never hire him.
