For as far back as I can remember, LSU was known for tough, devastating defenses. We’ve had a lot of great defensive players, but some guys stick out. Not necessarily the best athlete or the team leader, but the guy who, because of the way he plays the game, the other team doesn’t want anything to do with, on or off the field. (Recently, we seem to have lacked players like this…)

Some that come to mind for me include:

1) Al Richardson;
2) Eric Andolsek;
3) Bill Elko;
4) Steve Rehage;
5) Ramsey Dardar; and
6) Tyran Matheu.

I agree with your list except #1.

I played with Al. One of the kindest, sweetest, most humble kids in the world, until he he walked onto that 100x 53 1/3 yard rectangle. Then he was a BEAsT! Never outside though and never psycho.

I know Ron Lewis (the Birdman) who was a PK for LSU in the early 80's. The 2 guys he said you didn't mess with were Andolsek and Brooks. He's shared a few stories about those two and trust me, Brooks was a scary dude just doing regular life.

How is LaRon Landry not been mentioned yet. He has an argument for #1.

Off the field? Art Cantrelle.

”Art Cantrelle is pure evil, formed of twisted blue steel and raised in the smoldering fires of hell.

“When Cantrelle entered a bar, everyone knew him and they either left or all walked over to other side of the room. That's how bad Art was.”

Chad Jones (I thought) would have been an obvious answer. I will add JC Copeland. You could hear him growling as he was about to make his block at times.

I know Al too and love the guy! But he also broke 11 helmets during the course of a single season. That’s pretty intimidating to me… ??
