There are 361 NCAA Div 1 basketball teams, with a 68-team tournament. The vast majority enter every season with a 0.0 chance at winning a championship.

Top ten, period. No auto bids based on anything else. Number 11-12 last year was a joke.

I think you have to have eight because you can’t have a team go undefeated and get left out like Auburn in 04 and FSU in 23. But I agree too many teams is insane and hurts regular season.

It's ridiculous.

We need to go back to BCS where teams had to work there arse off to make it not just get a pass.

I like it. It encourages better competition in the regular season. With 24 teams, nobody can legitimately complain about being left out. Nobody will be left out because a schedule quirk had them playing Alabama and Georgia instead of Vanderbilt and South Carolina.

I don't buy the fact that fewer teams makes the regular season less important. What it does it makes teams avoid playing anyone who can beat them in the regular season. Teams can schedule legit tough games to open the season, instead of Jacksonville State or Prairie View A&M.

This past season, the #10 seed made it to the final game and lost by one score, so don't tell me that only 4 teams legitimately have a chance to be there.

In addition, with 24 spots available, there are probably going to be 30 teams that have a chance to make or miss out on the tournament in the last weekend. That is 30 fan bases that are jacked as hell for that last weekend. Even if they have a spot clinched, they will be playing for a bye in the first round. In the BCS era, there were maybe 3 or 4 games of any significance in the final weekend.

Finally, bowl games are irrelevant, today. Nobody gives a shite about the Sominex Siesta Bowl. Might as have more playoff games and let bowl games wither on the vine.

The BCS was VERY GOOD to LSU.

I liked it because it limited the human bias to some degree.

but some playoffs in sports aren't meant to be this expansive.

Pretty sure it's still one of the most, if not the most restrictive in US sports, with sub-20% of teams making the playoff. 24 of 134 is even more restrictive than 72 of 365 in NCAA basketball.

12 teams is the sweet spot to me.

It's an actual playoff but not too many teams.

24 would be ridiculous.

Two things can be true at same time: watching Coastal Carolina play in the Myrtle Beach Bowl at 11:00 AM on a Wednesday in front of 6,000 fans is depressing. Do I need to watch a 6-6 team play a 5-7 team in the Birmingham Bowl? No

But, if the New Orleans Bowl can scratch out 30,000 fans - that is 30,000 fans in hotels, restaurants and bars (bowls are thrown by chambers of commerce, tourism boards, etc.) and that is a good thing.

Plus: why do we want to watch #3 seed Ohio State beat #21 seed University of Houston 48-13? That really is better? Star players get hurt for rest of playoffs? More is not always more…

BCS computers have been fairly accurate on their picks too the last few seasons
the BCS formula was two-thirds voter polls. I much prefer a selection committee that takes their job seriously and studies a lot more data. Like for March Madness and baseball.

Don't rely on silly voter polls. Those voters spend very little time on their rankings.
