My Legitimate Criticism of CPM

Now that the hornet has calmed down.
1) The total absence of LH pitching on this year's staff. This has been mentioned before. And it is legit. Skip's defense doesn't past muster IMO unless we're talking top-shelf (think Lange, Nola, Gausman types) RHPs.
2) With all the team speed, why was a 'running game' mostly an afterthought? IDK for sure, but I suspect we don't have anyone on staff who can coach base stealing at the level we need.
3) Why is it we so often don't play our best ball when it counts most?
From '12-'17 (six seasons) we were a nat'l seed. Not discounting how impressive this was, we had 3 trips to Omaha and 1 CWS final to show for it. This season, Auburn and State made it to Omaha. We were 3-1 vs Auburn (could have so easily been 4-0), and 3-2 vs State (w/ no home games). Head-to-head, we were demonstrably better than both, yet they went farther.
CPM seems to have mastered the regular season-SECT. But we don't play our best when it counts most. Why so?
When I compare Paul to other coaches, there are a few (and only a few) that have a better track record (and only marginally so) over the last 10 seasons or so. Or 5 seasons. So I'm not in the fire CPM camp - yet.
But he does need weigh the legitimate criticism and make some corrective actions.

Buddy, every coach on our staff can coach base stealing. It’s not about coaching it, it’s about calling it. And that’s a matter of odds. Remember, when you try to steal you often hand them an out and lose a baserunner.

I will forward this to Paul right away

Agree, CPM needs to be aware of this kind of insight .

So, basically, you waited to post this to get more attention

Yeah, no. Being a good base stealer is a bit of an art. It's not something every coach can teach outside of the basics.

"it's not the 90's anymore"
"pm can't be expected to win it all every year"
"there's so much parity now"
"wake forest has a pitching lab"
"the cws results deficit with other teams is 'negligible'"
"lsu has been the 2nd best in the nation since '09 based on cws winning percentage"
"other schools have more seatbacks that can be seen on tv"
i think i hit all the excuses

LSU’s baseball program needs a change

The fans need a change more than the program.
We are a top 8 seed more often than not. We make it to the Supers almost every single year. We are still an elite program.

There are none so blind as those who will not see!
You guys with your head in the sand accept cheering for the fifth best baseball program in the SEC, at best.
"No staff changes...."
"No change in the way we handle pitchers.....". So you expect Hill, Labas, etc. to come back as well as Hillard, Gilbert & Walker came back this year?
Me thinks y'all better dust off some better excuses for next year. You will need them. By the way, how did that work out for you when you were defending Les?

CPM is much worse than that. You’re being kind.
You’ll still get tons of downvotes because 2009.

I think the game has passed him by and he refuses to change...kinda sounds like les.. He has managed to suck the life out of Alex box...i think he needs to make some changes in his staff or retire

You couldn’t be more wrong. Josh and Bregs could time up pitchers. Something they learn before getting to LSU. Dups, Watson & Brassard are faster but have no clue how to get a jump, or time a pitcher. This is also obvious with our pitchers that are clueless how to manage base runners.

Bottom line is this..it’s fckn time for LSU to rise above and assume your role as Alpha dog. These last 2 years are unacceptable performance. CWS or bust/CPM is gone

You realize the statement you responded to went against your whole argument right?

I agree with some of what you posted. But, it's ridiculous to think that LSU doesn't play its best at the end of the season (when it matters most) under Mainieri.
That's the one thing about Mainieri that really can't be questioned.
