I remember visiting the WWII memorial several years ago when a bus load of Veterans arrived on a bus. They all had the "If you can read this, thank a teacher. If you can read this in English, thank a Veteran" tshirts. My girlfriend and I instictively just starting hugging and thanking each one. It was one of the best memories of the trip.

My father-in-law was a B-17 pilot in WWII. Since I was in the USAF at the time I married his daughter, he told me some stories late at night over a few beers that made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. I suspect that was the first time he had told anyone about his flying experiences.

They were indeed the greatest generation.

His truly was the greatest generation! Not only did they and the country make sacrifices, they were proud to serve...a duty to their country. Perhaps even more important, when the war was over, they returned home, resumed their lives and built a country...never asking, much less expecting, the government to give them anything. We owe them a dept of gratitude to this day!

Thanks for the outstanding support. On the field with my grandpa was my dad and aunt. We also had about 40 family members from all over the state in attendance. They stuck us down the right field line but we all gathered above the dugout just before he took the field.

Big after party gathering at my dads here in Prairieville. He had an awesome time and was really taken back by the outpouring of support. He continuously said "why is everyone giving so much love to me, I'm no hero" he is selfless and loves his family.

I told him about this post and read some of yalls comments to him. He was appreciative. Thanks.

The first person to shake his hand was poche. My grandpa pulled him back and said something to him. I asked him later in the game what did you say to poche??? He said he told him "nothing less than a World Series you hear"

Perfect day and a 3-2 win to boot.

I had great seats near where your granddad entered the field, the joy on his face made my day.

As others have said, please take him to the WWII museum in NOLA, plan on spending several hours there, and bring a camera.

God bless him.

I hope he had a blast!

I would suggest to anyone in or visiting New Orleans, that they take some time to visit the WWII museum. It's truly an amazing exhibit and the Vets offer a real glimpse into combat. The things those guys accomplished and endured are inspiring.
