re: "Move FB to Spring" is the same bait and switch as "Flatten the Curve"

There seem to be strong prospects of a vaccine by late fall/early winter.
Waiting for, and relying on a vaccine in such a short amount of time is, at best, a pipe dream. At worst it could be disastrous. The first run of the Polio vaccine straight up paralyzed and killed people. It was a failure. They had to go back to the drawing board.
Now we're being told that they are developing a vaccine for a novel virus. Even if we ignore the fact that we have never, ever made a successful vaccine for any coronavirus before, it seems that developing and properly testing this vaccine before the end of the year is just lip service.

Right and does the vaccine work as "effectively" as the flu vaccine? Bait and switch is exactly what it is. Criminal.

It is objectively true that any vaccine ran out and distributed by the end of this year, or even next year, has NOT been properly studied and its long-term effectiveness and side effects are not known. That is why vaccines take years--to determine what the hell its going to do to people and whether it remains effective over time. It is impossible for that to happen here in this timeframe.

It’s weird that this board is so pro-Trump but Trump’s projections about the availability of a vaccine are something most conservatives think is total BS.

i'm not a Trump voter
i've also already posted an example of the person heading the federal government's response admitting to lying, earlier
they're all lying for the same reasons: to decrease the chance of societal chaos. same reason why universities are giving a *wink wink nod nod* "yeah we are going to play football in Spring, what, are we crazy!??!" it's all about crafting a new carrot to put in front of us so that we keep up the hope this is almost over.
the likely reality is too terrible to imagine right now and if society started to believe that, it would not end well. you try to imagine how to sell to us that we're not only about to enter a major worldwide depression, but we just added 25% to our national debt for no reason...so on top of the direct issues we face today, we'll burden our children and grandchildren with unnecessary government debt. there may be no good future for the generation that's 25-40 right now. what was already a bleak outlook due to 2008 is about to face another economic chasm.
so yeah, they're lying b/c it's too bleak to admit the likely outcome

I can't speak for everyone here, but I don't think we have a god-like worship for the man. He gets things right and he gets things wrong; you know, stuff that a normal human might do.

If they move the goal post it will just get canceled again
They should play this fall - the majority of players are willing to accept the risk.
They can keep the risk low / acceptable by keeping them in a lockdown bubble with on line learning only. Testing testing testing.
Major league soccer did it successfully. NBA is doing it and becoming better at it. No one in the stadiums though - only TV.
The midget at Alabama is right the athletes are safer in the bubble with their team than at home or some general student apartment complex.
It’s a win win for football to go forward this Fall. The players are safer in the right protocols - no crowds / stay in the bubble during the season. The schools get TV money. The players build their resume for the NFL. Fans get to watch LSU football.
I am a independent voter who hates Trump but I agree w him on Football this fall.

Agree on this and I want football more than anyone. But the argument is flawed because they don’t live in a bubble on campus. They are going to class, living in a dorm or off campus housing, they are going out like any other student. It’s not like the campus is shutdown and the players would be going home if they didn’t play football.

The athletes are pretty much consumed with football and school during the season. Or let me rephrase that. The teams that win are.
They aren't out and about like the other students (as much). You ever notice why they tend to get in trouble on bye weeks? It's because on game weeks, they don't do as much. So they kind of are in "a bubble", if you will.

They obviously have been staying in the bubble on campus this summer according to team protocol - much fewer positive tests as the summer has gone on.
It IS possible. Some Professional sports teams are showing this.
LSU had a breakout of positives at the beginning of the summer BEFORE they got into the bubble

The Spring delay is a tactic to keep student athletes from bailing on these programs. There will be no big10 or pac12 football in 20/21.
I hope they see through it.

I told y'all this would be a fun one to revisit at the beginning of the year.

it would be great, but it's not true

Oh man, I forgot how insanely confident (and wrong) some of these statements were. Here is SloFloPro saying that the timeline to a vaccine is likely to be closer to 4 years from last fall than the end of the year. I wonder if any of these immunologists will show up and admit that they had no idea what they were talking about.

We're going to have a vaccine well before the four year prediction from the first page of this thread.
that's a lot higher of a chance than having one ready by December. i mean did you read my link that Moderna won't even have enough humans to test their vaccine for the 3rd phase trial until sometime in September (optimistically)? you think they can complete a trial, crunch the numbers, and get whatever government approval exists now in 2.5-ish months?
let me put it another way, would you think that vaccine is even safe? we're talking about a type of vaccine we have never before used on humans without real science behind it and no oversight
