That's absolutely fine, he can go do whatever he wants. But the circle jerk around here for him is pathetic.

The circle jerk around your mom is way better.

Do people hate Aleah Finnegan too?

She couldn't make the US team. Thats kind of the point. No one cares if an athlete competes for another country if they couldn't make the US team. Mondo breaks world records which is why his situation is unique.

Have there ever been any other Olympic medalists choose another country over the US in the past?

Couldn't make the US team. Not apples to apples.

Right... and Mondo couldn't make the money or get the exposure with the US team that he now gets in Sweden.

If your argument for Aleah is that, then it's largely the same argument for why Mondo chose Sweden. Better opportunity.

USATF gives zero fricks about pole vault or field events in general. It's all sprinting. Ryan Crouser has won three golds in a row and you hear his name one week every four years.

Sweden does give a frick and pays Mondo a king's ransom to do it.

The fact that the U.S. Olympic Committee's own rules makes it more difficult for him, and all the U.S. Olympic athletes, to qualify for the Olympics makes it a no brainer for him to use his dual citizenship. One he has used his entire life, not just for sports. He went to LSU that one year because he wanted to be on campus with his brother. He could have just as easily gone that first year & started the money rolling in .But "blame" his country if you feel you need to blame someone. Every U.S. athlete hates the USOC's policy. FWIW, his mom & dad still live in Lafayette and, according to Mondo, that is where they keep all his awards.

I can't imagine legitimately caring about something like this.

I mean, I guess but they really aren't the same situation at all though. Mondo chose money over national pride. Again, not saying thats wrong, but it is true. Aleah would have competed for the US (presumably) had she been given the opportunity.

The difference in opinion is that one athlete chose another country despite having the chance to compete for the US while all the other athletes mentioned chose another country after the US passed them over. You can pound sand all you want but thats a HUGE difference.

Yes, we agree he chose money over national pride. I don't really have an issue with that but the people in here acting like he didn't do that is silly.

It is for the people who make the argument that Mondo "turned his back on his country"

Waters and Finnegan did too. They chose different countries, when they could've chose the USA. It means they wouldn't have been able to participate in the Olympics, but they still chose another country over their birth country.

No they didn't. Their choice was compete for another country or don't compete. Thats very different than competing for Sweden INSTEAD OF the US.

It's not though. Again, he could've chose USA... it just means he wouldn't play in the Olympics.

Just like Mondo could've chose USA... it just means he wouldn't have made as much money and gotten as much exposure.

It's a different scale, but both decisions are rooted in the same thing... best opportunity.

Strange things happen in the Olympic trials. The best in the US don’t always make it through. Defending Olympic champ in the women’s 800m got tripped at the US trials and didn’t qualify. Our best decathlete didn’t make it to the Olympics one year. It happens somewhat regularly that we don’t actually send our best to the Olympics.

Our poor selection system has consequences and Mondo is just one example.
