Ugh, Smith can be such a weapon in Cam's offense.

Agree, hopefully Cam splits him and Jeter out wide in the slot and uses them like he did Desean in the Notre Dame game.

...and have Chark and Tyron Johnson watching from the bench? The only way this is good is if you use the TE to trick the defense into going with heavier personnel, then you split him out and use him as a WR. Now the defense is guarding an extra wideout with a run-heavy defense.

In order for this to work the TE has to be a blocking threat. Get it? That's why they need to know how to block. If not, you're just substituting your sixth string WR for your third string WR. Dumb!

They do not. Too many people think all big, athletic TEs can be the next Jimmy Graham.

I know I'm not the only one who thinks the hype around the Big Cat Drill is one of the stupidest things in LSU fandom. Right???

Can you link to the people hyping the big cat drill? These threads are typically now filled with morons like you calling out these phantom fans who are "hyping the big cat drill".

Also, why does something as simple as the big cat drill make the moron portion of this fanbase angry anyway?

It doesn't make me angry. But, it is a fairly useless drill and every year during spring and fall camp, there are almost daily threads about the Big Cat. It's just dumb.

You're assuming the opposing defense will use the same personnel to cover a Desean Smith as a Tyron Johnson. I'm going to go with no.

And if they do, good. I like my chances of Desean in a passing route on a safety or LB or on a running play against a CB. The pass catching abilities of a TE creates the mismatches. If he's basically an auxiliary OT then it does you no good

ETA: I'm convinced there is a contingent of LSU fans who are more interested in Big Cat Drills than an actual game.

You know what a non blocking TE gets you? A pussy. A Jimmy Graham-like pussy.

Yea because this is not already happening with our "blocking" TEs
gasp, could that be why they are feeling the need to practice it? Never know.

Just an FYI one of the hallmarks of putting kids offensively to the next level is learning to block. Saban did that here with guys like Clayton and devery Henderson. Two of their biggest compliments in scouting were blocking abilities. It's 50% of the game on offense

It was ok then because it was Saban

There does seems to be an undue amount of attention given to these drills on these pages.
Let me know when something significant happens in one on one drills and we'll get the press out there right away...

So you are saying we didn't get much production in the passing game from the two tight ends that are better blockers than receivers.

Do you watch the games? They threw to Smith too and Jeter. But yeah I guess they are just blocking tes.

Jeter 6'7 245
Smith 6'5 244

So explain to me why Jeter is a blocker and Smith is a receiver? Or maybe Jeter is just an all around better player?

Foster was mainly in there to block, and Gordon was hurt most of the season but did both when he was in.

. What I am pointing at is Miles obsesses with skill position players blocking. Which is due in part to that bull shite offense he tries to run constantly.

son, it's really hard to have a successful football team w/o damn good blockers at the skill position. it's so basic I don't even want to explain it to you. it doesn't matter what offense you're in you need RB's, TE's and WR's that can block downfield or your playbook shrinks drastically.

and they are usually blocking another WR or just needed to nick an LB to give the qb time to get away or to throw.

miles needs to obsess with blocking. and (which I guess is your point) he needs to throw the ball to them also.

The Big Cat does not teach blocking technique. It is more like a Sumo wrestling contest. Big explosion into your opponent and attempt to drive him backwards or sideways.
