I'd be willing to bet Izzo throws in a little zone after watching some film

I hope they try to run zone. I remember Texas tried to run zone against us in 06 and Tyrus Thomas killed them with alley oops. This time it can be Kavell and Marlon Taylor.

Yeah, one of the greatest to ever coach the game has a week to prepare.

They'll go man-to-man at first but have zone in their pocket.

Let's hope that if Izzo is going to change and run a zone our coaches have a plan to execute better against it.

They are a pretty good man to man team...they will only throw a zone at us if we are hurting them in man to man. I don't know that we match up very well with them.

Make it 6! They will play zone against LSU. You can take that to the bank!

So let me get this straight, you think Tom Izzo "one of the best college BB coaches in the game" is going to look at what Maryland did to get back into the game by using a 2/3 zone and say "you know what I see they have trouble with a zone defense, but hey who cares about that lets just play them man-to-man and put as much suspense into the game as possible???

If you believe that Izzo won't be practicing zone defenses this week in practice, then you sir are a special kind of stupid!!!

Playing Zone is considered sissy to a guy like Izzo. Man defense is their identity.

They'll run zone. They don't even have to run it well to give LSU problems.

Maryland had hardly run it all year.

I’m not saying that dipshit. All I’m saying is I like our chances against their man defense and they play a lot of it. Stop putting words in other people’s mouths

Hey, I liked the information the OP provided.

Seems rather pertinent to know this is something they have essentially not played at all this year.

Why be such a douche?

For those wondering, here is a Tom Izzo breakdown over the last few seasons in relation to Michigan State running a zone defense

Total # of Plays in Zone Defense (% of Def. Poss)
2018-19: 5 (0.2%)
2017-18: 3 (0.1%)
2016-17: 24 (1%)
2015-16: 29 (1.2%)
2014-15: 23 (1%)
2013-14: 55 (2.3%)

ETA: Another note that I wanted to add.

Maryland ran zone on 34 total defensive possessions on the season entering the LSU game...

They ran zone on 34 defensive possessions vs LSU alone.

Nobody said anything about what Izzo will do in practice, the comment was about actually playing zone in a game.

If MSU is up by 15 at the half, and extends the lead in the 2nd half playing man-to-man, no, I don't think he'll switch to a zone just because Maryland found success against LSU with it. MSU has the players to play LSU man-to-man.

Maybe. Teams like Syracuse play a specific defense exclusively. They master it and don't change.

Now I'm sure Izzo will call a zone, but I also like that they will be in a scheme they aren't used to on the biggest stage of the year in that case. Hopefully we can exploit that.

I expect Izzo to throw the kitchen sink early in the game to see what is and isn't working in the half court. It is our coaches' job to use the right personnel and scheme, and it is the players' job to execute.

We need to crash the boards, then get out and run.

I bet they double that this week if LSU has any success.

Let's be honest, the team had no idea how to attack that 2-3 and the coach didn't seem to recognize the problem enough to make an adjustment.

If I'm MSU, and my team is built on man to man, I STILL have to run a zone for a couple of possessions just to see if LSU can handle it.
