Madam Chancellor,

It is being heavily circulated on social media and SEC fan message boards that you are directly involved in supporting Thursday’s vote to expel LSU from the Southeastern Conference.

If those reports are accurate, I would urge extreme caution before taking such an extraordinary step.

The suggestion that LSU — a founding member of the SEC — could be expelled from the conference has understandably created tremendous concern and anger throughout the State of Louisiana.

And at this point, what exactly is LSU being punished for?

LSU has now filled its 105-man football roster. The two former NFL players at the center of this controversy, Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, were not added and can no longer be added to the roster this season.

In other words, LSU and Coach Lane Kiffin backed away from the very action the SEC threatened to punish them for — despite a Louisiana judge issuing an injunction that would have allowed these athletes to participate and prohibited the SEC and NCAA from punishing schools for doing so.

That distinction matters.

This lawsuit was brought by student-athletes — not LSU. It involves dozens of athletes across multiple sports who are challenging their eligibility following the NCAA's change to its five-year eligibility framework. Some of these athletes are women who have never received NFL money or anything remotely resembling professional football compensation. They simply want the opportunity to compete for another year under the NCAA's new rules.

The NCAA changed its eligibility framework after athletes from the 2022 class had already made life-altering decisions based upon the rules that existed at the time. A Louisiana judge has now concluded that these athletes presented a sufficient legal case to warrant preliminary protection while that dispute is litigated.

Yet LSU now finds itself threatened with expulsion from a conference it helped found in 1933.

Commissioner Sankey's testimony in Baton Rouge also raised serious questions about how well the NCAA's newly adopted eligibility rules were understood before the SEC moved toward such severe penalties. If the governing rules themselves are changing and being litigated across the country, that should call for caution — not escalation.

Most importantly, LSU has now de-escalated the situation.

The former NFL players will not be on LSU's 105-man roster. LSU will not field them. Whatever competitive concern the SEC had about those players has therefore been removed.

So what purpose would now be served by expelling LSU?

Removing a founding member from the Southeastern Conference should never become retaliation for a disagreement over a rapidly changing eligibility system — particularly when the underlying lawsuit was filed by student-athletes, a court ruled in their favor, and LSU ultimately chose not to put the disputed football players on its roster.

I sincerely hope you and the other SEC presidents and chancellors consider those facts before Thursday's vote.

This has gone far enough.
