Very true. We couldn't run the ball with then having 3 dt being out ha.

Hopefully with a more normal rep spring and summer, a yr together, this seasoned group becomes a strength, along with that mature dline

What does class rank have to do with the best player winning the job?

would be a spit in the face to him in my opinion. He waited his turn, played well before his injury.

Waiting your turn doesn’t solidify your starting position. He played well with a 1-3 record against terrible teams, couldn’t convert 3 downs....9-39 on 3rd, if I remember correctly.

I’m not sure who will win the starting job, but your points for MB are irrelevant.

And if Max Johnson wins the QB competition and is clearly a better QB wouldn’t that be a spit in the face to the entire team not to play him

I don’t think some in this thread know how important this is. Give me an athletic, mobile QB with Burrow arm strength over a statue with a cannon arm.

Name the "athletic" qbs with super bowl rings.

Name the athletic QB’s who have national championships. You know, what we actually compete for, being a college football team and all.

But I’ll play along.

Russell Wilson, Pat Mahomes. Not hard. Also, Brady (the GOAT) doesn’t have a strong arm—-like Max. He has a weaker arm than Mahomes for sure, and maybe Wilson.

The biggest factor for me is max won the games he played in while Myles lost MSU and Missouri. Yes it’s a team sport and the team improved later in the season making it an unfair comparison but one qb is a proven winner against a top 10 sec team and the other isn’t.

The 4 yard pass on third and 10 was the play and the route called. Because our play callers were chicken bleep.... freshman on the road... blah blah blah..

Against Ole Miss the play callers let him loose. MJ made the reads and made the throws over the middle that Brennan and Finley would not.

Next MJ can actually run and makes the zone read and RPO credible... Brennan and Finley cannot. Brennan and Finley take 40% of the offense off the table.

They probably still start Brennen

I think Brennan's stats from the first two games vastly overrate his performances in those games. He wasn't very good against MSU and Vandy was awful. However, he looked like a different guy vs. Missouri. For the first time last season he looked completely comfortable and confident. He was making some big time throws and even making plays outside of the pocket. Some of those throws I don't think Johnson can make. Unfortunately, that was his last game on the season so we don't quite know if that was the beginning of him taking the next step to being a good/great QB, or just an anomaly.

For his part, Johnson looked completely comfortable in his starts vs. Florida and Ole Miss. He wasn't asked to make a lot of difficult throws, but he made most of the throws he was asked to make. That first TD vs. Florida was feel you simply can't teach and I don't think anyone else on the roster could make that play.

I think if you asked him off the record Orgeron is favoring Max to be the starter. O's a pretty simple/bottom line guy. Johnson is 2-0 as a starter. And as O has said multiple times those two wins were HUGE for the program (and Orgeron himself). It gave LSU some momentum going into the offseason and took some (not all) of the heat off of O. As unfair and maybe short-sighted as it may be O sees Brennan's record as a starter last year as 1-2 vs. Johnson's 2-0. And I think O believes Johnson is more of a "playmaker" than Brennan.

Ultimately, the OC is going to decide who starts. O will listen. But if it is "close" between the two I wouldn't be surprised to see O say "go with Johnson".

The one thing that can throw a wrinkle into the competition is if Brennan somewhat forces O's hand at the end of spring practice. Brennan has only two years left of eligibility. I suspect he doesn't want to spend 1 or both of those years standing on the sidelines. Thus, if he isn't going to be the starter he likely will want to transfer. And I doubt he wants to wait to do so in late August in the event Johnson is named the starter. That would pretty much waste one of Brennan's two remaining years. If he isn't going to be the starter he likely wants to know ASAP so he can decide what he wants to do and explore other options. Transferring in May gives him a chance to play for a new team next season. Transferring in Sept. likely doesn't.

Knowing this, O might decide to give Brennan the job in large part to prevent losing POTENTIALLY two guys before fall camp (Brennan and the 2nd year guy who will find himself 3rd on the depth chart). You'd like to think guys would stick with their team even if they are second string...but we all know that is not the case and HC's have to deal with that reality.

Can you elaborate on why you think that? Is it just because he’s “waited his turn” or “his stats are better” because I’ve rewatched every game from last season and all I see is a 4th year player that has developed no pocket presence despite being the veteran while a true freshman handled the pressure like he’s a 4th year player.

Thats spot on and also the way I see it in regards to both qb's. I think its only fair to open things up for the starting spot just like the coaches are doing and go with the guy that gives you the best chance to win. As a freshman Max looked very composed in the pocket and was beaming with confidence every time he went out.
