Gio getting hurt could have been his chance, but Mainieri had others ahead of him and he really didn’t get a shot then.

I have more of an issue with this part of the Hampton situation. He should have been given more opportunities when Gio got hurt but all people want to keep mentioning us what CPM told him prior to the season which at the time he was right about and was just being honest with the player.

I don't think he wants to play football.

Imagine hearing this, then seeing Bianco, Safford, Sanford, etc. getting reps before you. There’s a way to manage talent, and like has been shown on the baseball field and in roster management, Paul is lost.

Let’s not forget running off Chris Reid and then having to call him in from coaching little league to provide some hitting.

Makes no sense. If he was good enough to get a $1.8 million offer from MLB and turn it down, surely he was good enough to crack the starting lineup on this team some kind of way.

Can you imagine a Bo Jackson today being told to just stick to one sport? The kid had talent, and Paul and his staff's job is to develop talent, not run it off. Its why they have trainers to get them through and over injuries. The truth is LSU baseball training staff isnt very good, and needs replacing.

Yes he is. He had FREE living, food, and coaching.

Dude is pouting and self.loathing somewhere. Just a stupid move in every single level

I couldn't do nothing but laugh at this. You dont know shite. You dont know what he's doing, where he's located, or what kind of resources he has access to in order to stay fit and ready to play.

Paul went way further than just telling him he’d have to earn his spot…

I'm pretty convinced you don't know what he told him.

Paul took the commitment when they signed the guy, and yes I know it was a football scholarship, however, the lazy JA just told a player that he wouldn’t see any playing time behind no more than average players at his position. Say what you want about Gio but he is simply average and has zero arm in the outfield. I understand his speed but Hampton has speed also and his upside is far superior!

Gio was one of your best hitters when the season was cancelled last year. I understand why he would tell a guy that had been focusing on another sport for 6 months that he would have to wait his turn.

People are having issues with the wrong thing. Him telling Hampton that going into the season is not an issue. Not giving him more opportunities when Gio got hurt this season is the problem.

Agreed here. What was especially odd about the whole situation is that it went against everything we know about Mainieri. He always takes his lumps in early season non-conference games in order to get his most talented players playing time so that the team's most talented players reach their potential in time for post-season play. (Slaughter, Stevenson, Mitchell are a few examples) So why was he not forcing Hampton in the lineup as soon as Gio went down even if he wasn't quite ready?

I believe it is one of two things. Number one is the coaches truly thought the others were better in practice. Which they very well could have been but games and practice are two different things. Some do well in one and not the other. I will never blame a coach for giving the better practice player his shot first but when he doesn’t perform in games you have to try something different.

Number two and I don’t have any inside information but maybe CPM had an idea Hampton was going to transfer. As a man that has been a coach for 30+ years I am sure he has seen the signs of a player on the verge of leaving his program.

The guys that were ahead of him got the first opportunities.

He entered the portal on in early March. Let’s not pretend he sat on the bench for a long time.

Hampton was facing the reality that the path he wanted to pursue (full time baseball) was no longer a clear path for him. He was going to have to pass up talented guys just to have a chance of playing and hopefully eventually getting the starting job.

That was going to take time. I’m sure Hampton didn’t feel like he had time to waste. In reality, this season is lost anyway for him. He should have rode it out and left at the end of the season if he hadn’t made up ground.

But, pride is real. He thinks he is better than the other guys and expected to be treated that way.

In reality we don't know what all went on in the discussions between Manieri and Hampton. Some snippets from Manieri have come out from an early discussion. There have been rumors that Hampton was going to drop football. Talk was he wanted a full baseball scholarship, that wouldn't happen. If that actually did happen, Manieri may have already known he was transferring prior to Gio getting hurt. Again pure speculation, but so is everything else.

When he came out all those guys had been practicing all fall while Hampton was doing football.
If he puts Hampton ahead of these guys on day one he’s screwed.
The trick is to tell Hampton to be patient, but also tell Hampton he has to beat these guys out and once he does that he will have his chances. Obviously PM did a poor job communicating.

Ad for the Reid fiasco. Reid was never a top SEC player, but our recruiting was so poor that when they came to LSU PM realized the guys that were reported to be better than Reid were not and he needed Reid back.

That had been our recruiting story in a nutshell.

I have to believe O was going to require full attendance to all matters of football from Hampton given the new staff and horrific defense of Pelini and Mo would have had extremely limited time for baseball. He obviously wouldn't have had a full baseball scholarship available and his parents may not have had the means nor desire to pay school costs so he bailed. He should have stuck it out this spring and see where things stood after that.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Corey Coture is one of the best in the country as a trainer.

He will probably end up at Baylor. Aranda wants him for football and no doubt they could use him for baseball.

He didn't withdraw. Everything is online. He would still need grades to go to another school. There are eligibility requirements academically as well. Pretty sure he finished out the semester
