You have a vivid imagination if you think that’s what the statue means

The article says "long overdue".

Those of us old people who actually saw Maravich play agree. It's long overdue for him to be honored with the statue.

Meh.

I liked the rule that statues go to LSU graduates. The building is named for him and any new arena should be too. That’s honor enough.

Pete washed his hands of LSU when he left. He was pissed when they fired his father. He was not some proud alumnus. LSU meant nothing to him after he left.

I don’t care; not worth giving the effort to care about one way or the other, but yes, statues should be reserved for LSU graduates and don’t rewrite history—Pete Maravich wanted nothing more to do with LSU after he left.

Isn’t that the HoF rule? Wouldn’t you be pissed if your dad was fired? The Pistol deserves his statue

Burrow graduated from LSU with a master's degree.

Who cares?

Pete did far more for LSU than LSU did for him. He deserves everything given to him (statue, arena named after him, etc).

He also died at like 45. Time goes by and things change. He never got that opportunity.

Not sure why the negative responses, but I met Pete at the Smokoies, he talked w/ my dad for a long while. He was very nice to me, we shook hands and talked ball. Just a good guy. He was very easy to talk with. I was probably 11-12-ish.

Edit: I didn't care about an autograph. I spoke and talked with Pete and shook his hand.

Re JB, isn't there a time frame that has to pass before an athlete can be honored like this? Or is it to have a jersey retired? As for Pete, he is nationally recognized as having played for LSU & his per game scoring average is always tied to his LSU high lights. As noted, he died young & who is to say his feelings for LSU might easily have changed. He changed several parts of his life over time, his faith became quite strong & he completely changed his diet to a healthy one, absent as well from any booze. It was his old man who became extremely bitter over his firing, to the extent he took all the game films of Pete at LSU with him when he left.

Try 40 after he got his life together. You can bet that he would have reconciled when his son played. Pete was only at LSU because of his dad. He didn’t want to play here. Like another poster said LSU OWES far more to him than he owed to LSU.

He actually died at 40 and agree with you. Far to young to pass judgement on him about LSU.

I didn’t read the article. Is the other statue the binder plated in 24 karat gold?
