Regardless of how they ended up there, the point is almost every SEC team has had a taller 1B than us for the past 10+ years. It's not necessarily a gripe; more of a quirk.

Jake Slaughter - 6'2"
Nick Coomes - 5'11"
Greg Deichmann - 6'2"
Chris Chinea - 5'11"
Tyler Moore - 6'0"
Conner Hale - 6'2"
Mason Katz - 5'10"
Blake Dean - 6'1"
Sean Ochinko - 6'0"
Grant Dozar - 5'10"
Matt Clark - 6'5"

The only short guys we've had playing the position prior to this year were Dozar and Katz. Dozar played because we, quite frankly, just weren't a good team that year and used 5 different players at first base in 2011. Same for Katz, we had a hodge podge of different guys playing all over the field. I also am not quite sure if you're aware of what all the other teams are typically putting out at first base. Having a 6'3" true first baseman who can hit for power is not exactly the type of player who makes it to college.

Right on point. Unless you are a pitcher only type in high school / high level travel team most players that translate the best to the next level are ones with above average athletic ability, have strong arms, have a good glove, and understand the game flow / scenarios like its second nature. By default all of those aspects typically land on the SS or Catcher for nearly every team. If you are a top level talent 5'11" or taller for either position they are most likely drafted out of high school leaving behind a ton of 5'8 - 5'10 SS's that end up filling up college rosters.

Same goes for pitchers - tall pitchers with 90 velocity and somewhat refined 2nd and 3rd pitchers are drafted. Leaving tall pitchers with either high end velocity and no control, tall pitchers with good command but mid 80's or shorter pitchers regardless of velocity and command for the college ranks to pick from.

What you described were the guys he gets on campus. Not his “ideal player”

His ideal player would be:

Pitcher: throws 95, has a nasty breaking ball and a killer change up.

Hitter: bats .315+, has the power to hit 15+ HRs, can steal 20+ bases, and has an OBP of .425+.

Those would be abyone’s Ideal players.

It appears that his ideal recruit is a little on the small side-perhaps a little like him. Personally, I think he needs a little more strength and beef on the team !!

Look around the SEC last year at Rooker (MSU), White (UK), Spanberger (ARK)

Wasn’t Rooker an outfielder? Also Spanberger batted around .230 his first 2 years at Arkansas. LSU (or at least the fans) expects players to come in and hit over .300 day one.

Describes Nola, Gausman, Lange, Poche, Hess, Bugg, Cotton, Ott, Coleman, Goody, Eades, Newman, and Broussard perfectly imo. Hard to believe he won any games getting players like that. That's not including guys like Mac Marshall, Latz, Veitmeier, Labas whom we either didn't get to see or see much of. I'm sure they are going to suck. Who cares if they all got drafted that means nothing imo.

Position player:

- 5’ 9”
- 3-4 hr’s a year
- career .280 - .290 BA with a OBS of .380 - .400
- can play all positions mediocre but is built for 2B

Holy shite you are right on again. With the mild exception of having some of the best outfielders to ever step foot in Alex Box and the best SS to ever play for the tigers, and high draft picks at 1st and 3rd and also a couple of catchers that got drafted you are right on the nuts.

How does CPM win as often as does with so little talent?

But I just feel like recruiting could be a lot better considering LSU’s resources and prestige.

Obviously, CPM just doesn't know talent. Can't identify it and can't get it on campus.

half of our starting lineup last year played SS in high school, been that way for awhile. Very rarely have we even had a true 1st baseman. They've typically been utility players or converted catchers. I'm actually having a hard time remembering if we've ever had a true first baseman since Mainieri has been coach.

True first basemen usually hit for power and power is one of the first things that goes in the MLB draft. CPM actually had a couple of those on campus but they were so raw they didn't get much playing time. Bryce Adams ( i think that was his name ) was one recent example of that.

Baseball is the only program where you can have the number one class and no one show up to school due to the MLB draft. Plays into who you recruit and who you have.

This is what got Smoke run out of town. All that talent means nothing when you’re recruiting guys you know have zero intentions to actually show up to campus.

Paul has been fairly good about going after guys that are going to show up.
