Any sane person would be worried about our defense.

Watch the replay of Moo State

Opening kickoff returned to field goal position. 3 plays and a field goal (3)

Next time MSU scores is after back to back turnovers. Fumble gives them ball at about the LSU 43. They score a TD (10)

MSU has their ONLY sustained drive and score TD (17)

MSU gets ball around the 30 with 4 minutes plus left in the game and down 17. They complete ONE long pass and get a late hit out of bounds on Cutrera, moving it another 15 yards. MSU on the LSU 15. They score a TD (24)

Doesn't seem so bad to me.

One sustained drive. One long pass with a Personal Foul added. two short field scores

I agree in a large part...but sometimes I think we are asking to cover for too long of a period...no pressure on the QBs

Here is your correct answer. And this will be solved when LSU starts blitzing more.

Score Defense - 15.2/ppg ... SEC 5th ... NCAA 18th
Total Defense - 260.8/ypg ... SEC 7th ... NCAA 19th
Rush Defense - 69/ypg ... SEC 3rd ... NCAA 10th
Pass Defense - 191.8/ypg ... SEC 8th ... NCAA 46th
Sacks - 1.5/spg ... SEC 10th ... NCAA 66th

We're middle of the SEC pack. Not exactly LSU-like numbers against 2 cupcakes and 2 weak SEC offenses.

If that continues, it will be a real problem.

True, but there are some mitigating circumstances...no?

New dbs, etc.

Also, we played a game a 10 AM, dealt with Hurricane Gustav, missed a game, etc.

I am not saying the defense is GREAT and there are no issues. I am simply saying the sky is not falling and we are ranked #2 in the nation.

That's worth repeating. A long KO return, turnovers and a penalty lead to 17 of MSU's 24 points.

On a side note, I'm more concerned about our special teams (on kick offs and punts) than I am about our defense, at least for the Florida game. If we five UF great field position 2 or 3 times due to poor special teams coverage, it could be a long night.

Excellent post. Stats don't tell the whole story.

Not to mention 7 of AU's points was on that int. thrown by Lee, and another 7 was on that fluke pass play they got a large gain on.

I am a personally a little frustrated with our defensive coaches. We play excellent d against more traditional offenses but when teams spread us out they continue to eat our lunch. Thankfully we have enought talent prevent any major meltdowns. Every week we are told its all because of breakdowns or mistakes. I think the scheme needs adjusting. Maybe more blitzes, maybe more dime but it needs tweaking.

First poster to mention this, which I think is a valid point.

I do believe M&P will correct the back coverage, but I also believe there was method to the madness. Had we been blitzing (not really needed as game was in check) you would have not seen the back release. I also believe they wanted everything in front of them.......

Give credit to MSU playing by far their best game offensively and we were never in any real danger.

I am more than a little concerned with our pass defense. We have played 2 of the worst passing offenses in the country and both set season highs against us.

I will say that we had complete control of MSU until about 4 minutes left in the 3rd qtr. when they finally discovered the RB/LB mismatch and went off on it.

With inexperience at CB and LB, the coaching staff can't blitz as much--too much risk.

As the DBs and LBs get more comfortable with the base defense, the coaching staff will be able to use more blitz stunts, and they are probably holding some packages for Florida's passing game.

The only time I will worry about our defense is when they give up more points than we can score.

our QB pressure on passing downs needs to improve... really no excuse it shouldn't considering our depth of fresh legs and quality on the defensive line

we must get that production from the DL going forward to help our secondary out... if we don't then we'll be exposed because the truth is our LBs are poor in coverage and our CBs are green and our Safetys are run stoppers who do not excel in the passing game

I don't think it's being overly critical to note there's a trend of giving up occassional long passes (big gains) to the other team

Neither Auburn nor Mississippi State have particularly dynamic passing offenses either

Didn't Auburn score 14 on UT? That what the scored on our Defense.

Which is exactly why we won't blitz Florida very much, as they live to get Harvin and the others in 1 on 1 situations.

We'll rush 4...probably spy Tebow and Harvin and zone the rest.

There should be no problem with focus for the D since this should be a close game all the way through.

Our defense should be worried about our defense. We need a D coordinator.

Does the Tepper twosome believe in the blitz, or are is our two headed monster a traditional zone D theorist?
