Reading a ball quickly can be the difference in an out and a 3 run double in center field
reading a ball quickly in RF is the difference between a single and triple.

Drost played mostly RF at Barbe. Had some games at center and at 1st base. He has the arm and range to cover ground. He should do well playing in that position.

I would like to see pitch a few innings. Kid can play.

I would think it’s because Crews is going to be in the lineup everyday so they don’t want him going back and forth between center and right field. Whereas with Drost he might be in and out of the lineup with him, Sanford, Hampton, etc. Basically just less shuffling between positions

Which is the very thing he ought to be doing with a young team early in the season.

Also a lot of SEC games are a Thursday-Saturday series, so if Labas intends on being the number 3 guy, then he needs to get use to pitching on Saturdays

Point still stands that Drost primarily practiced in RF during fall and spring; so curious as to how suited he is for CF defensively.

No, the point no longer stands. To put Drost in the lineup someone who doesn’t plat CF will have to do so. Might as well be Drost.

It is much easier for a corner OF to move to CF than it is for a CF to move to a corner OF position. You get a much easier read and jump in CF than you do at the corner spots. The one real tricky play in CF is the seed right at you bc of the depth perception - that's not really easy at any OF spot but it is trickier in CF. I have no concern with Drost or most others in CF with Gio out.

PM compared Drost to Deichmann this morning. Noted he played CF in high school. Truth is that CF is the easiest of the OF positions especially for a freshman. Very little thought goes into the position because you can go after everything, balls don’t curve as much and it’s easier to read off the bat. RF at Alex Box is the toughest because of the sun. Drost in CF makes sense over RF.

The skills required to be a top CFer are greater than any other OF position.

Speed and first step. What else? I already explained why the position is easier for a freshman compared to RF at Alex box. Do you disagree?

It’s harder to be a good CFer than a good RFer in Alex Box or anywhere else.

RF at the Box is tougher to play than left because of the Sun and because of the throws. But CF is the premium position in the OF and you always play your best OFer there.

Disagree. You put your best athlete there simply for the range. No other reason. The difficulty level in terms of balls hit and the throws you have to make are not more difficult than RF at tBox.

The CFer has to be able to go much deeper, he’s got to be able to cover more ground, and he needs a big arm if he wants to be elite. He has to have great instincts so he can get a great jump on a ball. He often covers for a slow fielder or fielders on his flanks too.
To be an elite CFer it takes a superior athlete.

I said this. Speed and first step. But we are talking about two freshmen and neither are at the elite level. One has been in RF and will stay there probably most of his career. The other has a canon too and just needs to make the routine plays and not have to think about the sun. I’m pretty sure PM has said RF is one of the toughest positions to play at tBox. It’s not an uncommon opinion at all.

All I said was that it’s harder to be an elite CFer than any other OF position. End of story.
I don’t know if Crews is better or Drist is better. I have no opinion about which guy would be the best CFer.
And I’d wager more savvy baseball people will tell you it’s harder to find elite CFers because it’s the toughest OF position to play.

If you’ve found an elite OF, you’ve found an elite CF. You want your best athletes there’s because of the ground to cover and more balls hit there. That doesn’t make it easy or hard. Just like SS isn’t easier or harder than 3B. It’s just where the better athletes go. The most difficult OF position to play at Alex Box for an inexperienced OF (freshman) is RF. I’ve given my reasons.

You don’t put a kid in CF because he’s a rookie and so he won’t get the Sun in his eyes. You put him there because he is your best OFer and hopefully he’s got all the tools to be a good one.
You aren’t going to hide anyone there or shelter a player there. Not in the Box of in the SEC.
