Wilson Alexander tweeted out that Mainieri said earlier today they are giving Drost practice reps in CF in order to try and find a way to work him into the lineup more. LINK

My only thing with this is why complicate things and practice him in CF? I believe he practiced in RF some during the fall; so why not move Crews to CF and let Drost play RF? He is also a pitcher; so you'd assume he'd have an above avg. arm throwing from RF as well. And Crews actually moved to CF towards the end of one of the games earlier this week; so obviously there is some trust there for him to handle the position.

Mainieri also announced that Labas will technically pitch the 2nd game of this weekend's series, which will be on Saturday afternoon, and Marceaux will pitch the night game that day, which is technically the 3rd game. I'd imagine this is being done as Labas would ordinarily be pitching a day game when on Sundays (his normal spot) and Marceaux pitching late afternoon/evenings on Saturdays.

ETA: For the people already downvoting ( ), I'm not complaining about trying to get Drost in the lineup. I like that idea. Just wondering why practice him at CF when I don't recall that being a position he practiced at all fall or spring.

he did? I don’t recall seeing him there. Maybe you’re thinking of Bianco

I thought it was Crews too when he first caught Bianco caught the ball running towards the wall.

That was Bianco, three times in four games.

He moved to centerfield in the second Air Force game (after Gio got injured), the Louisiana Tech game after Sanford started in center and last night in the ULL game, again after Sanford started in center.

Just went back and looked. Guess y'all are right. Could have sworn there was a game that Crews had shifted over to CF during the last inning or so of a game. Oh well. Point still stands that Drost primarily practiced in RF during fall and spring; so curious as to how suited he is for CF defensively.

And again, not complaining about wanting to find a way to get him into the lineup more. Just think there are better ways to do it.

I dont mind it. Drost played some cf in high school. And PM views right field as a tough position with the sun. So he prefers to keep guys there who are used to right field.

because sometimes you have to do stuff like that to be able to:

try and find a way to work him into the lineup more.

Probably because Nicholls should be better than Youngstown so start the better pitcher against them if they both have to throw that day.

I wonder if there’s a reason to not move Crews? Thinking over the first few games, he has misjudged a ball, but it was hit pretty hard, and Gio did get hurt extending his range from centerfield. Maybe protecting Crews? He looks athletic enough to play centerfield, must be that they don’t want Crews extending himself, or they just think Drost has the skills , and less risk at centerfield....

It's probably a case of Mainieri preferring to have one player not playing in his usual position rather than two players playing out of position.

If Drost has issues playing in center, Mainieri is never shy about making changes, especially this early in the season.

PM is known for putting weird fits in CF. Tho I’m not sure Drost fits that bill; he’s one of the better athletes on the team.

Who, for example? Mikie Mahtook? Andrew Stevenson? Zach Watson? Jake Fraley? Mason Katz? (Okay, maybe Mason Katz fits your description...)

Hill v Youngstown St
Labas v Youngstown St
Marceaux v Nicholls St

I'm good with that. Let Marceaux shove it down another in state team's throat.

Doesn’t that same logic apply to Crews? I don’t think it matters really. Playing CF is a primary defensive position but it is not a very difficult one. For the most part it is read ball get ball.

Reading a ball quickly can be the difference in an out and a 3 run double in center field

Nothing ruins a solid rant myth like the facts. You should be ashamed of yourself.

PM compared Drost to Deichmann this morning. Noted he played CF in high school. Truth is that CF is the easiest of the OF positions especially for a freshman. Very little thought goes into the position because you can go after everything, balls don’t curve as much and it’s easier to read off the bat. RF at Alex Box is the toughest because of the sun. Drost in CF makes sense over RF.
