As someone who doesn't follow the draft or the intricate process of the money involved, can anybody point me to an explanation of why; if X persons signs then So will Y and so on.

If Aiken doesn't sign, they can only offer Mac $100k

They need the "savings" from Aiken's allotment to sign Marshall. If Aiken doesn't sign they lose 7.9 million from their pool.

I am not going to get my hopes up. I have seen this movie too many times.

They lose all that money in his slot.
For example, Aiken's slot is $7.9 million. If they sign Aiken for, say, $4.5 million. The Astros will be able to use the extra $3.4 million to sign Nix ($1.1 mil over slot), and then all the way up to $2.3 mil extra to throw at Mac. And that's not even considering the $100,000 they can pay without penalty and the 5% bonus slot exception.

Ok, I didn't realize that the MLB teams are already assigned $X amount of slot money, and that is not recoverable if a player is not signed. I just assumed that if you don't sign your second round guy, you have all that money available to sign your 11th round pick.
Makes sense, it stops the Yankees from drafting Choupique19 in the second round to save money on some kids falling later in the draft.

By my calculations, the Astros need to sign Aiken for around $5.7-5.8 mil for Mac to not get his $1.5 mil.
There's no way the Astros offer Aiken that kind of money after going through all this BS.
The only hope is if the kid walks and he won't do that staring $3-4 million in the face at 3pm at 18 years old.
