LSU’s offensive line may be behind, but that’s to be expected this spring

LSU’s front seven on defense could be one of the most dominant in college football this season, particularly in the trenches. The starting defensive line of Breiden Fehoko, Ed Alexander and Rashard Lawrence is formidable, and a relatively slimmer Tyler Shelvin at nose tackle would make it even more potent. Shelvin still isn’t where the Tigers want him to be weight-wise, but nevertheless had a dominant scrimmage with 6 tackles.

As a pass rusher, sophomore K’Lavon Chaisson might not be the force that Arden Key was as a sophomore, but he should be an upgrade from Key’s injury-hampered junior season.

Compare that to the current state of the LSU offensive line. The Tigers are breaking in a new position coach (James Cregg) and a new offensive coordinator (Steve Ensminger). With that comes some new pass protection techniques. It probably will take a full spring and even a bit of camp in August to get those down pat.

The offensive line also isn’t playing with a full deck. Saahdiq Charles, the returning starting left tackle, is out this spring. Austin Deculus, who will challenge to start at right tackle, also is limited.

That should be less of an issue this fall. With three returning starters plus a junior college transfer who has been getting the best reviews of any offensive player this spring (Damien Lewis), the O-line should shape into a strength for the 2018 Tigers. And the defensive line will be an even greater strength.

It only makes sense that the offense would be behind with this little practice time. No reason to be concerned by that. It wouldn't surprise me if they're still protecting straight up and not scheming against one player or anything like that.

But I was told we got the struggles in last year with a young oline and this year would be different

If you ran a spread offense, it allow the linemen to lock up in more one on one battles. Almost all of these lineman came from a spread offense in high school.

That's an assumption that I'm not ready to make. What is he basing this on?

HECK NO!

You’re getting Cam Cameron’s playbook, just a different play caller.

This caught me off guard. Was expecting Traore to be the more dominant one off the bat. Good for Lewis though

I've seen three practices and two scrimmages. There is NO CHANGE!
Coach O went back to what he knew, thats why he hired Jerry.

This explains the Canada firing.

yep O has a bunch of yes men that will never question him. I’m not surprised at all they can’t coach a spread offense considering it’s been 20 yrs for our OC and O knows nothing about offense. It will be painful to watch.
